Figari Award
The Figari Award ( es, Premio Figari) is given annually to visual artists from Uruguay in recognition of their careers. It was instituted in 1995 by the Central Bank of Uruguay, at the initiative of the then president of the institution, economist and sculptor . Since 2010, the organization of the award has been in the charge of the , under the National Directorate of Culture (DNC) of the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC). It is a recognition of artists in activity that represents a consecration in their line of work. Of non-competitive nature, in each edition an organizing committee proposes a qualified jury that is in charge of analyzing the situation of the most outstanding artists, reviewing their achievements, career, and impact in the local and international scope. Pedro Figari
Pedro Figari (June 29, 1861 – July 24, 1938) was a Uruguayan painter, lawyer, writer, and politician. Although he did not begin the practice until his later years, he is best known as an early modernist painter who emphasized capturing the everyday aspects of life in his work. In most of his pieces, he attempts to capture the essence of his home by painting local customs that he had observed in his childhood. Figari painted primarily from memory, a technique that gives his work a far more personal feeling. With his unique style, which involved painting without the intention to create an illusion, he, along with other prominent Latin-American artists such as Diego Rivera and Tarsila do Amaral, sparked a revolution of identity in the art world of Latin America. Clever Lara
Clever Lara (born 26 November 1952) is a Uruguayan plastic artist, teacher, and curator. He made his first studies of painting in his hometown of Rivera with the master Osmar Santos. From 1964 to 1968 he attended the workshop in Montevideo. Between 1975 and 1979 he taught at the Institute of Fine Arts San Francisco de Asís. He then set up his own teaching workshop in Montevideo, where he has trained many artists, a task that he continues with today. In 1983 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship, with which he studied metal engraving in New York and Valdottavo-Luca, Italy, with Luis Camnitzer. He represented his country at the Venice Biennale in 1986 and at the São Paulo Biennial in 1981 and 1994 and received numerous national and international awards. Virginia Patrone
Virginia Patrone (born 1950 in Montevideo, Uruguay) is an Uruguayan visual artist who worked in Uruguay before moving to Spain in 2003. Education In 1971 Patrone began her studies as an architect in the Faculty of Architecture, in the Universidad Mayor de la República, Uruguay's National University. In 1978 she turned to painting, studying until 1981 in the Studio of Pepe Montes. Montes himself had trained in the studio of the renowned Montevideo artist Joaquín Torres García. Patrone is a founding member of the Buenaventura Studio, established in 1989 with the artists Carlos Musso, Carlos Seveso, and Álvaro Pemper. Margaret Whyte (born 21 February 1940) is a Uruguayan visual artist. Career Margaret Whyte began her artistic activity in 1972 at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Montevideo. She studied with , , Amalia Nieto, Rimer Cardillo, , and . She has been a member of the (FAC) since its inception. Her work includes paintings, soft sculptures, installations, and interventions. Gladys Afamado (born 24 May 1925) is a Uruguayan visual artist, engraver, and poet. A member of the Montevideo Engraving Club since 1954, she has contributed to many of its monthly editions and almanacs. She later ventured into different plastic artforms, and in recent years has been recognized for her work in digital art. Biography Gladys Afamado was the second of five children of Isaac Isidoro Afamado, a Jewish immigrant based in Montevideo, and his wife Julia, the daughter of Italian immigrants, born in Dolores, Soriano.
