Fifth Column (band)
Fifth Column was a Canadian all-female post-punk band from Toronto, formed in the early 1980s. History The band took the name ''Fifth Column'' from their interpretation of an alleged military manoeuvre by fascist Francisco Franco during the Spanish Civil War, in which Nazi-aligned nationalist insurrectionists within besieged Republican Madrid, called the Fifth column, aided the four columns (north, south, east and west) outside the city's perimeters. Soon after forming, the group became involved in the Cassette culture of the 1980s. Their first release was a selection of songs on the cassette compilation ''Urban Scorch'' released by Some Product in 1981. GB Jones, Caroline Azar and Candy Parker released an underground xerox art/social commentary zine named ''Hide'', of which they published five issues. ''To Sir, with Love'' is a 1967 British drama film that deals with social and racial issues in an inner city school. It stars Sidney Poitier and features Christian Roberts, Judy Geeson, Suzy Kendall and singer Lulu making her film debut. James Clavell directed from his own screenplay, which was based on E. R. Braithwaite's 1959 autobiographical novel of the same name. The film's title song " To Sir with Love", sung by Lulu, peaked at the top of the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart in the United States for five weeks in the autumn of 1967 and ultimately was the best-selling single in the United States of that year. ''To Sir With Hate'' is the debut album by Canadian post punk band Fifth Column, released in 1985 on Hide Records. Considered a classic of Canadian music, it was named a shortlisted nominee in the 1976-1985 category for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize, the 2017 Polaris Music Prize, and the 2018 Polaris Music Prize. Michael Phillip Wojewoda
Michael Phillip Wojewoda is a Canadian record producer and musician. He has been nominated for eight Juno Awards and has received one for Recording Engineer of the Year and one for Producer of the Year. History Wojewoda began recording bands in 1977, working in the basement of his mother's beauty salon and using rudimentary equipment. In 1985, he produced the 2016 Polaris Music Prize and 2017 Polaris Music Prize Heritage Prize nominated album ''To Sir With Hate'' by Fifth Column. Mydolls
Mydolls is an American punk band from Houston, Texas, United States, consisting of Linda Younger on guitar and vocals, Dianna Ray on bass and vocals, Trish Herrera on guitar and vocals, and George Reyes on drums and vocals that were active from 1978–1986, then from 2008 until the present. Formation Mydolls formed in 1978 in Houston, Texas. Dianna Ray and Trish Herrera began writing songs together. Dianna and Trish were then joined by Linda (Bond) Younger. The Dave Howard Singers is a cult Canadian alternative rock band/project originally formed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The project is based around the talents of singer-songwriter Dave Howard (the only consistent member) and the signature sound of his Ace Tone organ. During the second half of the 1980s, the band were resident in (and drew many members from) Britain, where they were a cult act making several appearances on nationwide television. Anti-Scrunti Faction
Anti-Scrunti Faction were an American queercore punk trio from Boulder, Colorado, United States. The band made their first appearance in 1984 on the Restless Records compilation LP entitled '' FlipSide Vinyl Fanzine Volume 1'', assembled by the fanzine '' Flipside'', with the song "Big Women". In 1985, Anti-Scrunti Faction released ''A Sure Fuck'', a single on Unclean Records. Appearing on the extended single are Leslie Mah, bass and vocals, Tracie Thomas, guitar and vocals, Sarah Bibb on drums for two songs and Eric Van Leuven on drums for the remaining four. Later that same year the album ''Damsels In Distress'' came out on Flipside Records. The artists' names are intentionally obscured on the album: the guitarist is listed as T. Fifth Column
A fifth column is any group of people who undermine a larger group or nation from within, usually in favor of an enemy group or another nation. According to Harris Mylonas and Scott Radnitz, "fifth columns" are “domestic actors who work to undermine the national interest, in cooperation with external rivals of the state." The activities of a fifth column can be overt or clandestine. Forces gathered in secret can mobilize openly to assist an external attack. This term is also extended to organised actions by military personnel. Clandestine fifth column activities can involve acts of sabotage, disinformation, espionage, and/or terrorism executed within defense lines by secret sympathizers with an external force.
