Fifteen Rabbits
''Fifteen Rabbits'' (german: Fünfzehn Hasen: Schicksale in Wald und Feld) is a 1929 survival and adventure novel by the Austrian writer Felix Salten. The novel depicts a year in the life of a colony of rabbits in the same forest where Bambi dwells. As the title indicates, there are 15 rabbits who feature in the story, but not all of them survive to the end. Although ''Fifteen Rabbits'' is a story of a collective, the young Hops is the main character, with his beloved Plana. Publication history ''Fifteen Rabbits'' was first published in German language, serialized in ''Neue Freie Presse'' newspaper from August 20 till October 10, 1929, and later that year by the Zsolnay company in Vienna as a book. In 1930, the novel was published in the United States in an English translation by Whittaker Chambers, and republished in 1942 with illustrations by Kurt Wiese, and in 1976 illustrated by John Freas. Felix Salten
Felix Salten (; 6 September 1869 – 8 October 1945) was an Austro-Hungarian author and literary critic in Vienna. Life and death Salten was born Siegmund Salzmann on 6 September 1869 in Pest, Austria-Hungary. His father was Fülöp Salzmann, the telegraph office's clerk in Pest; his mother was Maria Singer. He was the grandson of an Orthodox rabbi. When he was four weeks old, his family relocated to Vienna, Austria, as many Jews did after the Imperial government had granted full citizenship rights to Jews in 1867. When his father went bankrupt, the sixteen-year-old Salten quit school and began working for an insurance agency. He also began submitting poems and book reviews to journals. He became part of the "Young Vienna" movement (''Jung-Wien'') and soon received work as a full-time art and theater critic for Vienna's press (''Wiener Allgemeine Zeitung'', ''Zeit'').
