Fields Park A.F.C.
Fields Park Football Club. are a Welsh football club from Newbridge in the county borough of Caerphilly, south Wales. The team reformed in 2014 and currently play in the North Gwent Football League Premier Division. Club history Originally formed in 1921, the club played in the Tredegar and Ebbw Vale leagues as Fields Park United. In the 1950s the club played in the Abertillery League. This was a period of great success for the club, with six league titles in a 12-year period whilst also reaching 10 cup finals, winning eight of them. In the 1962–63 season the club achieved promotion to the Mon Senior league. In the 1965–66 season, they won the Second Division title to gain promotion to the First Division of the Mon Senior league. In the 1970–71 season the club were invited to join a new league being set-up by the Gwent Football Association called the Gwent Premier League. Newbridge ( cy, Trecelyn) is a town and community in the county borough of Caerphilly, south Wales. It lies within the historic boundaries of the county of Monmouthshire. Etymology The Welsh placename for Newbridge is often incorrectly shown on OS Maps as ''Cefn Bychan''. It is in fact ''Trecelyn'', meaning "the town of the holly trees". History The town is located within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire, considered by some to be a part of England until the late 20th century. In medieval times what are now the separate townships of Abercarn, Cwmcarn and Newbridge were known as Abercarne, a manorial title which goes back to the Norman period. Pontllanfraith ( cy, Pontllanfraith ) is a large village and community located in the Sirhowy Valley in Caerphilly County Borough, Wales, within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire. It is situated adjacent to the town of Blackwood, with the Sirhowy River passing through both locations. The village includes the communities of the Penllwyn, Springfield and The Bryn. The population of the community at the 2011 census was 8,552. Etymology The name of the village is a combination of ' "bridge" + ' "lake" + ' "speckled", "the bridge of the speckled lake". Although a masculine noun in Modern Welsh, ' "lake" was feminine in the medieval language of the south, hence the mutated feminine form ', rather than unmutated masculine ' as would be found today. County borough is a term introduced in 1889 in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, to refer to a borough or a city independent of county council control, similar to the unitary authorities created since the 1990s. An equivalent term used in Scotland was a county of city. The Welsh Football League (also known as the Nathaniel Car Sales Welsh Football League for sponsorship reasons) was a club football league in Wales. For its final season in 2019–20 season it operated at levels 3 and 4 of the Welsh football league system.
