Field Hockey In The United States
Field hockey in the United States is a sport which has only limited popular support. In the US the sport used to be female dominated as opposed to Europe's male dominant leagues. However, in the United States of America, there are few field hockey clubs, most play taking place between high school or college sides, almost entirely of females. The strength of college field hockey reflects the impact of Title IX which mandated that colleges should fund men's and women's sports programmes comparably. Pennsylvania is a hotbed for field hockey in the United States. History The modern game of field hockey originated in Europe, and grew due to the growth of public schools. Springfield College started playing the game when Dr. James Huff McCurdy composed a set of rules for American Field Hockey, and it continued to grow. United States Women's National Field Hockey Team
The United States women's national field hockey team, represents the United States in international field hockey. The team is currently coached by Anthony Farry. It made its first international appearance in 1920 when a touring team visited England, coached by Constance M.K. Applebee. The team made several international appearances in the early 20th century, leading to the United States hosting the eighth International Federation of Women's Hockey Associations Tournament in 1963. Once the IFWHA merged with its counterpart on the men's side, the United States' first appearance at an FIH-sanctioned tournament was the 1983 Women's Hockey World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where the Americans ended up in sixth place. Constance Applebee
Constance Mary Katherine Applebee (June 4, 1873, Chigwell, Essex, United Kingdom – January 26, 1981) is best known for introducing Field hockey in the United States. She was a co-founder of the American Field Hockey Association and served as its head for 20 years. She also founded Sportswoman magazine and was the athletic director at Bryn Mawr College for 24 years. Applebee graduated from the British College of Physical Education in 1899. In 1901, she came to America and took a course in anthropometry at Dudley Allen Sargent's Summer School of Physical Training at Harvard University. After a discussion among her classmates and instructors regarding the British sport of field hockey, she took them to a courtyard behind the Harvard gymnasium and gave a demonstration of the game. Kathleen Sharkey
Kathleen Sharkey (born April 30, 1990) is an American field hockey player. In 2016, she was named to the United States women's national field hockey team for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Early life Kathleen Sharkey was born on April 30, 1990. She grew up in Moosic, Pennsylvania with three siblings, including an older sister. Watching her older sister, Laura, play field hockey sparked Sharkey's interest in the sport. She went on to play field hockey at Wyoming Seminary. Collegiate field hockey player Playing as a striker for Princeton University, Sharkey set multiple all-time school field hockey records including career points (245), points in a season (85), goals in a career (107), goals in a season (38), most total goals and assists in a career (138), most goals in a game (6) and most points in a game (12). Field hockey at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 6 to 19 August at the Olympic Hockey Centre in Deodoro. The competition had instituted several changes in the format and structure from the 2012 Summer Olympics. Twenty-four teams (twelve each for men and women) competed in the tournament. Field hockey at the 2012 Olympic Games in London took place from 29 July to 11 August at the Riverbank Arena within the Olympic Park. On 13 November 2010 the International Hockey Federation (FIH) decided to allocate 12 teams for each men and women events respectively. Germany won the men's tournament for the fourth time, and the women's tournament was won by the Netherlands — their third Olympic women's hockey title. Field hockey at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing was held over a fourteen-day period beginning on 10 August, and culminating with the medal finals on 22 and 23 August. All games were played at the hockey field constructed on the Olympic Green. Competition format Twelve teams competed in both the men's and women's Olympic hockey tournaments with the competition consisting of two rounds. In the first round, teams were divided into two pools of six teams, and play followed round robin format with each of the teams playing all other teams in the pool once.
