This (Peter Hammill Album)
''This'' is the 25th studio album by Peter Hammill, released on his Fie! label in 1998. There is a large variety in the compositions, ranging from the minimalism of the final song, "The Light Continent", to the rough, almost Nadir-like sound of "Always is Next", the complex "Unrehearsed" and the ballad "Since the Kids". Peter Hammill performed the song "Unrehearsed" live many times. "Nightman" can be heard on the live-album ''Veracious'' (2006). Production and instrumentation The album was recorded, mixed and mastered at Peter Hammill's own studio, Terra Incognita in Bath, between January and July 1998. All instruments were played and all voices sung by Hammill, except for violin and viola by Stuart Gordon, saxophones and flute by David Jackson, and drums and percussion by Manny Elias. Hammill himself regards the album as "not in any sense a 'band' disc", and considers "the unifying factors o besong and voice rather than instrumentation". The songs are interspersed with small ...

Thin Air (album)
''Thin Air'' is British singer-songwriter Peter Hammill's 32nd solo album, released on his own Fie! Records label in June 2009. It was additionally made available as digital download through Burning Shed Records. As on his previous release, '' Singularity'', Hammill played all instruments, wrote all the songs and produced the album. The main theme of the album is disappearance, as Hammill told British music magazine Mojo in February 2009: "it became apparent fairly quickly that strong thematic links were running through the songs' lyrics: disappearance, change, loss, dislocation in various forms were stitched through all of them." Another topic reappearing in several songs is the one of the World Trade Center along with images of planes, though Hammill denied "any direct" reference to 9/11. According to François Couture of AllMusic AllMusic (previously known as All Music Guide and AMG) is an American online music database. It catalogs more than three million album entrie ...

Singularity (Peter Hammill Album)
''Singularity'' is the 31st studio album by Peter Hammill, released on his own Fie! Records label in December 2006. The album was the first Hammill recorded after suffering a heart attack in 2003. Some of the songs ("Our Eyes Give It Shape", "Event Horizon") refer directly to his brush with death. Others address questions of mortality in related ways ("Meanwhile My Mother" is about his mother's decline, "Friday Afternoon" about the untimely death of his piano tuner). Unlike most recent Hammill albums, ''Singularity'' is a completely solo effort, i.e. it was written, played and produced entirely by him. It has been hailed by some as one of his best albums since the 1980s.Mike Barnes, ''Life Sentences''. Wire, March 2007. pp. 34-41 The cover was again designed by frequent Hammill collaborator Paul Ridout. Using a photo by Dinu and playing with the term "Singularity" it shows Peter's face on the back cover a second time as a mirror-image. Track listing All songs written by P ...

Incoherence (album)
''Incoherence'' is the 30th studio album by Peter Hammill, released on his Fie! label in March 2004. ''Incoherence'' is a concept album about language, containing 14 tracks with soft transitions between them. The album was produced and played by Hammill himself, with contributions from Stuart Gordon on violin and David Jackson on flute and saxophones. ''Incoherence'' is recognized by critics as ambitious and one of Hammill's major works. Production and instrumentation ''Incoherence'' is Hammill's fourth (either with Van der Graaf Generator or solo) long piece of music with continuous transitions between sections which can be identified as single songs. At 41 minutes, however, it is twice as long as the earlier examples, "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" (1971 with Van der Graaf Generator), "Flight" (1980) and "A Headlong Stretch" (1994). Musically, the 14 sections vary widely from calm, harmonic songs to difficult and highly demanding sections, tied together by Hammill's un ...

He was a founder member of the progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator. Best known as a singer/songwriter, he also plays guitar and piano and ..., released on his Fie! label in 2002. ''Clutch'' contains nine tracks played exclusively on acoustic guitar with accompaniments on saxophones and other instruments. The album was produced and played by Hammill himself, with contributions from Stuart Gordon on violin and David Jackson on flute and saxes. In the liner notes he states that even though the instrumentation is mostly acoustic, it is not a "folk" album. As usual a lot of the songs deal with dark subject matter and his vocals are quite intense in places. The liner notes say "the palette is restricted but the canvas is broad". The Margin (album)
''The Margin'' is a live album by Peter Hammill, documenting early nineteen-eighties concerts by his K Group. Hammill used the alias K (on vocals, piano and guitar), Nic Potter was Mozart (on bass guitar), Guy Evans was Brain (on drums), and John Ellis was Fury (on backing vocals and guitar). The album was originally released as a double album on Foundry Records in 1985. It was reissued some years later on CD on Virgin Records in the UK with one track missing in order to make it fit onto a single CD and on Line Records in Germany with two tracks missing. Hammill then reissued it again on his own Fie! record label, as ''The Margin +''. This issue did not restore the track lost from the UK CD edition from the original vinyl release, "The Second Hand", but included an additional disc of material previously released as a live bootleg called ''The Secret Asteroid Jungle''. The liner notes explain that Hammill chose to include a different performance of "The Second Hand". The original ...

None Of The Above (Peter Hammill Album)
''None of the Above'' is the 26th studio album by Peter Hammill, released on his Fie! label in 2000. Production and instrumentation Hammill recorded ''None of the Above'' in his home studio, Terra Incognita, between January 1999 and February 2000, playing, producing and arranging nearly all instruments and singing nearly all voices. Some contributions were made by Stuart Gordon (violin, viola) on three tracks and Manny Elias (drums, percussion) on one track. Peter Hammill's daughters Holly and Beatrice Hammill sing backing soprano voices on two tracks. The instrumentation is dominated by guitars (more as a "colour-wash", as Hammill wrote in his newsletter), keyboards and some strings. The long recording time is due to Hammill's parallel work on a remastered 4-CD compilation of Van der Graaf Generator called ''The Box''. Title The title of the album is the English phrase " None of the above", meaning none of the other choices are appropriate. The expression can be seen here ...

The Fall Of The House Of Usher (Hammill Opera)
''The Fall of the House of Usher'' is an opera by Peter Hammill (music) and Chris Judge Smith (libretto). It is based on the 1839 short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe. Background Hammill and Smith, two of the co-founders of Van der Graaf Generator, worked sporadically on the opera from 1973 until its first recording was released on Some Bizzare Records (the only instance of Hammill's work appearing on the label) in November 1991. The album was released on CD, cassette and a limited edition of 500 double vinyl LPs. Smith's libretto takes certain liberties with Poe's source text. The House itself becomes a vocal part, to be sung by the same performer who sings the role of Roderick Usher. The narrator, unnamed in the story, is given the name Montresor (the name of the narrator of another tale by Poe, "The Cask of Amontillado"), and a romantic attachment between Montresor and Madeline Usher is hinted at. In 1999, Hammill regained the rights to the music from Some Bizza ...
