Ferrières-en-Gâtinais
Ferrières-en-Gâtinais (; literally "Ferrières in Gâtinais") is a commune in the Loiret department in north-central France. Ferrières was the site of the Benedictine monastery Ferrières Abbey, which had an extensive library in the Middle Ages. Geography The municipality is located in the Gâtinais region, north of the national forest (''forêt domaniale'') of Montargis, 13 km north of the town of Montargis, 81 km north-east of Orléans and 98 miles south of Paris. To the north the municipality borders the department of Seine-et-Marne. The Cléry, a tributary of the Loing, flows through the village. The municipality contains the village of Ferrières and the hamlets of Saint-Séverin, Petit-Ambreville, Le Grand-Ambreville, Collumeaux, Egrefin, Birague, La Queue-de-l'étang, Tirelande, Le Perrocher, and La Grange Tascher. Ferrières Abbey
Ferrières Abbey was a Benedictine monastery situated at Ferrières-en-Gâtinais in the ''arrondissement'' of Montargis, in the ''département'' of Loiret, France. History Represented in the famous '' Monasticon Gallicanum'', it seems clear that the abbey (despite a tradition based on the Acts of Saint Savinian and a forged charter of Clovis I, dated 508) was founded in about 630 by Columbanus, an Irish monk. The dedication was to Saints Peter and Paul. (According to Dom Mazoyer there was before then at Ferrières a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin under the title Notre-Dame de Bethleem de Ferrières). It reached a height of prosperity in the time of the celebrated Lupus ( Loup of Ferrières) (c. 850), when the abbey became quite an active literary centre, but the library was destroyed at the same time as the monastery, and only rare fragments survive. Loing
The Loing () is a long river in central France, a left tributary of the Seine. Its source is in Sainte-Colombe-sur-Loing, in the southwestern of the department of Yonne, and it flows into the Seine in Saint-Mammès, near Moret-sur-Loing. Its main tributaries are the Ouanne, the Aveyron, the Puiseaux, the Solin, the Lunain and the Orvanne. Gâtinais
Gâtinais () or Gâtine () was a province of France, containing the area around the valley of the Loing, corresponding roughly to the northeastern part of the département of Loiret, and the south of the present department of Seine-et-Marne. Under the Bourbons, the Gâtinais had already been divided between the provinces of Île-de-France and Orléans. In the words of the modern tourist slogan for the "two Gâtinais", it lies between the Seine and the Loire.
