Ferris University
is a private women's college in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan. It is a part of Ferris Jogakuin ( 学校法人フェリス女学院). The predecessor of the school was founded by American Presbyterian missionaries in 1870 with the assistance of James Curtis Hepburn, primarily to teach the English language and western cultural values to women. The male counterpart of the school later became Meiji Gakuin University. It was chartered as a junior college in 1950 and became a four-year college in 1965. was an educator, translator, and novelist best known for translating ''Little Lord Fauntleroy'' written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. She is also known for introducing literature with Christianity for children's novels. Early life Born to Katsujirō Matsukawa as the eldest daughter in Aizu (Aizuwakamatsu post 1868), named according to the year on Chinese calendar when she was born. At the age of one in 1868, her father left his family as an espionage who served for Aizu clan against the revolutionist during Boshin war, and the next year, he was relocated to Tonami, the present day Mutsu with his feudal lord. Kashi, her mother and the newborn sister Miya endured poverty and adverse circumstances during that period in Aizu, while Kashi's mother died in 1870. Mayumi Miyata
is a Japanese player of the '' shō'', a traditional Japanese mouth organ. Miyata was born on April 1, 1954, in Tokyo and graduated from the Kunitachi College of Music, where she majored in piano. While in school, she began studying '' gagaku'' music from Ono Tadamaro of the Imperial Household Agency. Although the ''shō'' is generally associated with Japan's ancient ''gagaku'' court music, Miyata was among the first players of the instrument to specialize in contemporary classical music. She plays a specially constructed instrument with extra pipes, allowing for the use of more chromaticism. The US composer John Cage (1912–1992) composed a number of works for Miyata just before his death. Cage met her during the 1990 Darmstadt summer course. Izumi Nakamitsu (中満 泉 ''Nakamitsu Izumi''; born 1963) is a United Nations Under-Secretary-General of Disarmament Affairs from March 29, 2017 appointed by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. Anna Ogino
is a Japanese author and emeritus professor of literature at Keio University. She has won the Akutagawa Prize, the Yomiuri Prize, and the Itō Sei Literature Prize. Early years Ogino was born as Anna Gaillard in Naka-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, to a Japanese mother and a French-American father. Her mother, Kinuko Emi, was a prominent abstract painter.
