Alfredo Martini
Alfredo Martini (18 February 1921 – 25 August 2014) was an Italian cyclist and coach from Sesto Fiorentino, north of Florence. Professional from 1941 to 1957, he won a stage in the 1950 Giro d'Italia and was later the coach of the Italian national team. He also rode in the 1949 Tour de France. In 2021, in honour of Martini's 100th birthday, the one-day race Per sempre Alfredo was first held; the race finishes in Martini's home town of Sesto Fiorentino. Under his 22-year tenure as head coach, Italy got six gold medals at the Road World Championships with 5 different cyclists (Francesco Moser, Giuseppe Saronni, Moreno Argentin, Maurizio Fondriest once each and Gianni Bugno twice), plus seven silver and as many bronze medals. Gösta Pettersson
Gösta Artur Roland Pettersson (born 23 November 1940) is a retired Swedish cyclist. As an amateur, he competed in the individual and team road events at the 1960, 1964 and 1968 Olympics and won one silver and two bronze medals, in 1964 and 1968. In 1968 he also took part in two track events: individual and team 4000 m pursuit. Pettersson's brothers, Erik, Sture and Tomas, were also Olympic cyclists, and their quartet was known as the Fåglum brothers. They won the World Amateur Cycling Championships in 1967–1969 and a team silver medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics; three of the brothers were also part of the bronze-winning road team at the 1964 Games. In 1967 they were awarded the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal. After the 1969 World Championships the Fåglum brothers turned professional. General Classification In The Giro D'Italia
The general classification in the Giro d'Italia is the most important classification of the Giro d'Italia, which determines who is the overall winner. It is therefore considered more important than secondary classifications as the points classification or the mountains classification. Since 1931, the leader of the general classification is identified by a pink jersey ( it, maglia rosa ). Prior to that year and since the creation of the race, no colour was used to distinguish the winner at the top of the classification. The first rider to wear the maglia rosa was Learco Guerra following the first stage of the 1931 Giro d'Italia. The first jersey was entirely pink and made from wool. It had a roll-neck collar and front pockets. As Italy was under Fascist Party rule there was a gray shield stitched onto the shirt, a symbol for the party.
