Fernley High School
Fernley High School (also known as FHS or Fernley School) is a coeducational, secondary school located in Fernley, Nevada, United States, eastside of the Reno metropolitan area. It is the largest school in the Lyon County School District. The school participates in an advanced placement program with Western Nevada College that allows some students to earn an Associate degree in addition to a high school diploma. As of 2015, it was the highest performing school in this joint enrollment program, known as "Jump Start." The student population as of the 2018-2019 school year was 1,096, and the school has drawn hundreds of international students since 1990s. History Fernley School was founded in 1928. Fernley is a city in Lyon County, Nevada, United States, and part of the Reno–Sparks metropolitan area CSA. The city was incorporated in 2001. The population of the city was 19,368 at the 2010 census. Fernley was home to the historic and one of the first Amazon.com centers in the world, which has since relocated within the metro area. The 2017 Mountain West Conference football season, part of that year's NCAA Division I FBS football season, was the 19th season of college football for the Mountain West Conference (MW). Cameron McVicar Batjer (August 24, 1919June 1, 2011) was an American lawyer and Justice on the Supreme Court of Nevada from 1967 to 1981. Early life and education Batjer was born on his maternal grandparents' ranch in Smith Valley, Nevada to Robert Wilhelm Batjer and Mary Belle McVicar. His father, a native of Oldenburg, Germany, was a cattle rancher and teamster, and his mother was a schoolteacher. He attended Fernley School and graduated from the University of Nevada in 1941, majoring in economics and history and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He taught school in Dayton where he met and married fellow teacher Lura Gamble, a native of Hazen.
