Fermont
Fermont () is a town in northeastern Quebec, Canada, near the Quebec-Labrador border about from Labrador City on Route 389, which connects to the Trans-Labrador Highway (Newfoundland and Labrador Route 500). It is the seat of the Regional County Municipality of Caniapiscau. Fermont (French contraction of "''Fer Mont''", meaning "Iron Mountain") was founded as a company town in the early 1970s to exploit rich iron ore deposits from Mont Wright, which is about to the west. The town is notable for the huge self-contained structure containing apartments, stores, schools, bars, a hotel, restaurants, a supermarket and swimming pool which shelters a community of smaller apartment buildings and homes on its leeward side. Quebec Route 389
Quebec's Route 389 connects Route 138 adjacent to Baie-Comeau with the Newfoundland and Labrador border, connecting with the Trans-Labrador Highway (Newfoundland and Labrador provincial route 500) to Wabush and Labrador City, and beyond to Goose Bay. On its way it skirts the eastern shore of Manicouagan Reservoir. Route description The Québec North Shore Company and Hydro-Québec completed portions from Route 389 to the Manic 5 hydroelectric project site (km 213), now known as the Daniel-Johnson Dam. From km 213, the highway follows a path traditionally used by aboriginal people and explorers, with access to the Hart Jaune Hydroelectric Complex at km 390. Caniapiscau is a regional county municipality in the Côte-Nord region of Quebec, Canada. The seat is Fermont. Québec Cartier Mining Company
Québec Cartier Mining Company was one of the leading producers of iron ore products in North America, now part of ArcelorMittal. The company was founded in the late 1950s by multiple Canadian and American investors, based in Quebec, Canada. The first open pit mine was located in Lac-Jeanine, Quebec. The Hart-Jaune Dam over the nearby Hart Jaune River supplied power. The company then built the town of Gagnon, in 1963 to accommodate workers and families. Eighteen years later, the company extended its operations seventy miles north to Fire Lake. In 1973, they started operating in Mont Wright, Quebec, where they created the town of Fermont. At their Mont Wright plant, the company operates an open pit mine and a crusher/concentrator facility capable of producing eighteen million metric tonnes of iron ore concentrates annually. Maurice Desnoyers
Maurice Desnoyers (1927 – 12 December 2022) was a French-Canadian architect and winner of the OAQ Medal of Merit and the Massey Medal. His projects include the Autostade, Musée de la civilization de Québec, and portions of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, among many others. Early life Desnoyers was born in 1927 in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, sixth in a family of 11 children. His father was a baker. He attended McGill University and studied engineering and architecture, graduating in 1954. Architecture career In the 1950s he began his architecture career in Europe and worked as an associate on the UNESCO building in Paris. In 1957, he and André J. Mercure formed the firm Desnoyers Mercure & Associés. They renovated the Prince-Arthur Gardens in 1973, for which they earned the Massey Medal in 1975. Duplessis (provincial Electoral District)
Duplessis is a provincial electoral district in the Côte-Nord region of Quebec, Canada, that elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. It notably includes the municipalities of Sept-Îles, Port-Cartier, Havre-Saint-Pierre, Fermont and the community of Maliotenam. It also includes a single municipality from the Nord-du-Québec region: the Naskapi village municipality of Kawawachikamach (not to be confused with the Naskapi reserved land of the same name, which Duplessis also includes, but is in Côte-Nord). It was created for the 1960 election from parts of the Saguenay provincial electoral district. Côte-Nord (, ; ; land area ) is the second-largest administrative region by land area in Quebec, Canada, after Nord-du-Québec. It covers much of the northern shore of the Saint Lawrence River estuary and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence past Tadoussac. Svappavaara
Svappavaara (Meänkieli: ''Vaskivuori'') is a locality situated in Kiruna Municipality, Norrbotten County, Sweden with 417 inhabitants in 2010. It is a mining village. Mining was started around 1650. Large scale iron mining started in 1965. The mine was closed in 1983, but enrichment of iron ore from the mine at Kiruna is still going on. The mine is owned by LKAB, and there is an ongoing project to open it again for production around year 2015. Labrador City
Labrador City is a town in western Labrador (part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador), near the Quebec border. With a population of 7,412 as of 2021, it is the second-largest population centre in Labrador, behind Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Neighbouring Labrador City is Wabush, a smaller town with a population of approximately 1,964 as of 2021. Together, the "twin towns" are known as Labrador West.
