Ferdinand Heckscher
Ferdinand Heckscher (1806 – 28 February 1891) was a German-Jewish actor. Biography Heckscher, who had a fine bass voice, began his theatrical career as a singer, but, finding his opportunities in this field too limited, he abandoned music entirely in 1833 and devoted his energies to the drama. He studied under Benelli and at the private theater Urania, Berlin, and made his début at the Königstädtische Theatre in that city in 1825. From 1826 to 1830 he was at Sondershausen; from 1830 to 1832 at Bremen; 1832–34 at Königsberg; 1834–41 at the Hoftheater, Dresden, where he played in company with Emil Devrient, Carl Weymar, and F. W. Porth; from 1841 to 1845 at Breslau; and until 1846 as director of the theatre at Sondershausen. He retired shortly after. He appeared as a star at the Hoftheater, Berlin, and in Cassel, Coburg, Brunswick, Lübeck, Königsberg, and Danzig. ' (''Katie of Heilbronn or The Trial by Fire'') (1807–1808) is a "great historical knightly play" (German: ') in five acts by the German playwright Heinrich von Kleist. The action of the drama takes place in Swabia during the Middle Ages. Performances The play was first performed at the Theater an der Wien on 17 March 1810 and then published in the same year. Originally, the first two acts appeared separately with the play ''Phöbus'', also by Kleist. Although the play has gained respect among modern audiences, it was originally largely rejected. Goethe, who was director of the theatre at Weimar when it was written, refused at first to present it, calling it "a jumble of sense and nonsense." Karl Ferdinand Gutzkow ( in Berlin – in Sachsenhausen) was a German writer notable in the Young Germany movement of the mid-19th century. Life Gutzkow was born of an extremely poor family, not proletarian, but of the lowest and most menial branch of state employees. His father held a clerkship in the war office in Berlin, and was pietistic and puritanical in his outlook and demands. Jacob Wittmer Hartmann speculates that Gutzkow's later agnosticism was probably a reaction against the excessive religiosity of his early surroundings. ''Fiesco'' (full title – ''Die Verschwörung des Fiesco zu Genua'', or ''Fiesco's Conspiracy at Genoa'') is the second full-length drama written by the German playwright Friedrich Schiller. It is a republican tragedy based on the historical conspiracy of Giovanni Luigi Fieschi against Andrea Doria in Genoa in 1547. Schiller began it after the 1782 premiere of his first play, ''The Robbers,'' and dedicated it to his teacher Jakob Friedrich von Abel. It has 75 scenes, which is more than Goethe's highly popular ''Götz von Berlichingen''. It premiered in Bonn in 1783 at the Hoftheater.
