Fencing At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's épée
The women's épée competition in fencing at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held on 6 August at the Carioca Arena 3. For the victory ceremony the medals for the competition were presented by Claudia Bokel, Germany, member of the International Olympic Committee The International Olympic Committee (IOC; french: link=no, Comité international olympique, ''CIO'') is a non-governmental sports organisation based in Lausanne, Switzerland. Carioca Arena 3
Carioca Arena 3 (Portuguese: ''Arena Carioca 3'') is an indoor stadium in Barra da Tijuca in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The venue hosted taekwondo at the 2016 Summer Olympics, taekwondo and fencing at the 2016 Summer Olympics, fencing competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics and the judo at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, judo and Wheelchair fencing at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, wheelchair fencing competitions at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Carioca Arena 3 was planned to be transformed into a sports high school after the Games. During the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, the structure of Carioca Arena 3 was used as a base for the health workers on vaccination programme. As of February 2022, the Arena is open for children engaged in sports activities promoted by the prefecture of Rio de Janeiro. Katharine (Kat) Holmes (born July 15, 1993) is an American fencer. She competed in the women's épée event at the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics. She was a world champion in the women’s epee team event (Wuxi, China 2018), which was the first World Championship medal won by an American women’s epee team, defeating Korea in overtime in the finals. She also anchored the United States women’s epee team to its first World Cup gold medal (Dubai 2018), defeating Russia in overtime in the finals. She was the back-to-back gold medalist in both the individual and team events at the Pan American Games in Lima in 2019 and Toronto in 2015. She qualified to represent the United States in fencing at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo in 2021. Lyubov Andreyevna Shutova (russian: Любовь Андреевна Шутова; born 25 June 1983) is a Russian fencer, World champion in 2009 and team World champion in 2013 and 2014. Simona Pop née Deac (born 25 December 1988) is a retired Romanian épée fencer, bronze medallist at the 2015 European Championships, team silver medallist in the 2015 World Fencing Championships and team European champion in 2014 and 2015. Personal life Pop was born in Satu Mare to a Hungarian father and Romanian mother. Pop took up fencing at CS Satu Mare, one of the main fencing centres in Romania, under the coaching of Francisc Csiszar who went on to train her for twelve years.
