Fencing At The 2012 Summer Olympics – Men's Sabre
The men's sabre competition in fencing at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London was held on 29 July at the ExCeL London Exhibition Centre. There were 37 competitors from 21 nations. Hungary's Áron Szilágyi won the gold medal, beating Diego Occhiuzzi of Italy won took silver. Nikolay Kovalev from Russia won the bronze. Szilágyi's gold medal was Hungary's 13th in the men's sabre. Background This was the 27th appearance of the event, which is the only fencing event to have been held at every Summer Olympics. Three of the quarterfinalists from 2008 returned: gold medalist Zhong Man of China, fifth-place finisher Luigi Tarantino of Italy, and eighth-place finisher Aliaksandr Buikevich of Belarus. ExCeL London (an abbreviation for Exhibition Centre London) is an exhibition centre, international convention centre and former hospital in the Custom House, Newham, Custom House area of London Borough of Newham, Newham, East London. Aldo Montano (fencer Born 1978)
Aldo Montano (born 18 November 1978) is an Italian fencer and a five-time Olympic medalist. He received a gold medal in sabre individual at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. On 11 October 2011, he won the gold medal at the World Championships in Catania, Italy. He won a silver medal in Men's team sabre at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Biography He is the third generation of his family to win a fencing medal for Italy at the Olympic Games. Aldo initially took up foil, but switched to sabre so he could follow in the footsteps of his grandfather and father. His grandfather, Aldo Montano, won silver medals on the team event in sabre at the 1936 Summer Olympics and the 1948 Summer Olympics. Florin Zalomir (; 21 April 1981 – 3 October 2022) was a Romanian sabre fencer who competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics winning a silver medal in the sabre team event. Yu Peng Kean
Yu Peng Kean (born 8 May 1991 in Malacca, Malaysia) is a retired Malaysian fencer. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he competed in the Men's sabre, but was defeated in the last 32 by Áron Szilágyi who went on to win gold medal in the event. Yu suffered a knee injury at the 2011 Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Jakarta, with which he struggled for the remainder of his career. Following the 2012 Summer Olympics, he underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction on both legs. He took bronze at the 2015 SEA Games after being defeated by Vũ Thành An of Vietnam, but re-injured his knee. He underwent surgery again, and planned to compete at the 2017 SEA Games with hopes of winning a silver or gold medal, but the condition of his knee continued to worsen, and he announced his retirement from fencing in February 2017. Wang Jingzhi (born 28 August 1982, in Tanggu, Tianjin) is a Chinese sabre fencer, who competed at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. James Leighman Williams
James Leighman Williams (born September 22, 1985, in Sacramento, California) is an American fencer. College career Williams is a graduate of Columbia University. He fenced for the Columbia Lions fencing team. In his college freshman year, he posted a record of 18–3. Coming into Columbia he was ranked 8th nationally in Junior men's sabre, and 19th in Senior men's sabre. Williams originally began fencing with the Sacramento Fencing Club. After graduating from high school, James moved to New York to attend Columbia University. He graduated in 2007 with a B.A. in United States History and Russian Studies. In 2006 in his junior year he received All-American status, after placing 5th at the NCAA championships. He placed 1st in sabre at the North American Cup.
