Fencing At The 1968 Summer Olympics – Women's Foil
The women's foil was one of eight fencing events on the fencing at the 1968 Summer Olympics programme. It was the tenth appearance of the event. The competition was held from 19 to 20 October 1968. 38 fencers from 16 nations competed. Competition format The 1968 tournament continued to use a mix of pool play and knockout rounds, but with substantial changes from 1964. The first two rounds were round-robin pool play, followed by a knockout round, finishing with another pool for the final. Barrages were eliminated and the knockout round was a modified double elimination round.Official Report, pp. 640–41. * Round 1: 6 pools, with 6 or 7 fencers in each pool. The top 4 fencers in each pool advanced, cutting the field from 38 to 24. * Round 2: 4 pools, with 6 fencers per pool. Fernando Montes De Oca Fencing Hall
The Fernando Montes de Oca Fencing Hall is an indoor sports venue located in the Magdalena Mixhuca Sports City area of Mexico City. It hosted the fencing competitions and the fencing part of the modern pentathlon competition of the 1968 Summer Olympics. The Olympic Fencing Hall was built between November 13, 1967, and September, 1968, in the Magdalena Mixhuca Sports City. The 310-by-210-foot rectangular structure is covered by a convex roof of corrugated asbestos supported by steel cables. The ground floor had 15 fencing strips—each of which was provided with a two-sided scoreboard, a judges' podium and a control table—and 37 cubicles for competitors. On the south side were facilities for the press, dressing rooms, etc. The north side housed offices, a lounge, a warm-up area and additional dressing rooms and service areas. Janet Bewley-Cathie-Wardell-Yerburgh
Poppy, Lady Cooksey OBE DL, previously Janet Wardell-Yerburgh, née Janet Clouston Bewley Cathie (born 15 February 1940) is a British fencer whose later career was in picture restoration. She married firstly the Olympic oarsman Hugh Wardell-Yerburgh and secondly the business man Sir David Cooksey. In 1998 she was appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire. Early life Cooksey was born in 1940, the elder daughter of Ian Aysgarth Bewley Cathie MD, of Barton House, Barton-on-the-Heath, Warwickshire, and his wife Dr Marian Josephine Cunning. Her father was lord of the manor of Barton-on-the-Heath. Although christened as Janet, she is known by the name Poppy. Educated at Cheltenham Ladies' College and London University, where she graduated B. Sc., she then trained as an accountant. Helga Mees or Volz-Mees (12 July 1937 – 11 April 2014) was a German fencer who competed at the 1960, 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics in the individual and team foil events. She won an individual silver and team bronze in 1964, whereas her teams finished in fourth and fifth place in 1960 and 1968, respectively.
