Fencing At The 1912 Summer Olympics – Men's épée
The men's épée was a fencing event held as part of the Fencing at the 1912 Summer Olympics programme. It was the fourth appearance of the event, which had been introduced in 1900. The competition was held from 11 to 13 July at the Östermalm Athletic Grounds. There were 93 competitors from 15 nations. Each nation could enter up to 12 fencers. The event was won by Paul Anspach of Belgium. His countryman Philippe le Hardy took bronze. Silver went to Denmark's Ivan Joseph Martin Osiier, the only medal won by the perennial Olympian who competed in seven Games over 40 years. The medals were the first in the men's épée for both nations. Östermalm Athletic Grounds
Östermalm (; "Eastern city-borough") is a 2.56 km2 large district in central Stockholm, Sweden. With 71,802 inhabitants, it is one of the most populous districts in Stockholm. It is an extremely expensive area, having the highest housing prices in Sweden. History During the reign of the ruler of all of Scandinavia, king Eric of Pomerania in the early 15th century, a royal cowshed/barn was erected on the lands of the village Vädla. Since the town of Stockholm had grown and started to encroach on the borders of that village, there were many complaints about animals causing damage in the town. Hans Bergsland
Hans Bergsland (15 November 1878 – 9 June 1956) was a Norwegian fencer, sports official and businessperson. He was born in Kristiania, was an older brother of Jacob Bergsland and represented the fencing club Kristiania FK. He competed at the 1908 ( épée) and 1912 Summer Olympics ( épée and team épée). He finished his secondary education in 1897, took commercial education in Germany, France and England and the cand.philol. degree in 1901. From 1916 to 1922 he ran the company Peter Petersen & Co. Konstantinos Kotzias
Konstantinos "Kostas" Kotzias ( el, Κωνσταντίνος (Κώστας) Κοτζιάς; 17 May 1892 – 8 December 1951) was a Greek fencer. He competed at the 1912 and 1924 Summer Olympics. In 1934 he was elected Mayor of Athens. In the dictatorial Metaxas Regime, he served as Minister for the Capital District. Following the suicide of Prime Minister Alexandros Koryzis on 18 January 1941, amidst the German invasion of Greece, King George II of Greece considered him to head a new cabinet, but his candidacy was unsuccessful, as he was closely associated with the Metaxas Regime and few politicians were willing to work under him; the British ambassador to Greece, Michael Palairet, also opposed his nomination in talks with the King, due to Kotzias' Germanophile reputation. Ahmed Hassanein Pasha, KCVO, MBE () (31 October 1889 – 19 February 1946) or Aḥmad Moḥammad Makhlūf Ḥasanēn al-Būlākī () was an Egyptian courtier, diplomat, politician, and geographic explorer. Hassanein was the tutor, Chief of the Diwan and Chamberlain to Farouk, the king of Egypt from 1936 to 1952, and also represented Egypt in the 1924 Summer Olympics in fencing. Knut Hugo Adolf Enell (19 March 1887 – 9 November 1985) was a Swedish officer, auditor and fencer. He competed at the 1912 and 1920 Summer Olympics. Petros Manos ( el, Πέτρος Μάνος 7 April 1871 – 4 April 1918) was a Colonel in Hellenic Army. He also competed at the 1912 Summer Olympics.
