Felton Wilson
Felton Wilson (April 24, 1908 – September 15, 1973) was an American Negro league catcher in the 1930s. A native of Talladega County, Alabama, Wilson made his Negro leagues debut with the Cleveland Stars in 1932. He played for the Akron Black Tyrites the following season, and finished his career in 1937 with the Detroit Stars. Catcher
Catcher is a Baseball positions, position in baseball and softball. When a Batter (baseball), batter takes their at bat, turn to hit, the catcher crouches behind home plate, in front of the (home plate, home) Umpire (baseball), umpire, and receives the ball from the pitcher. In addition to this primary duty, the catcher is also called upon to master many other skills in order to field the position well. The role of the catcher is similar to that of the wicket-keeper in cricket. Positioned behind home plate and facing toward the outfield, the catcher can see the whole field, and is therefore in the best position to direct and lead the other players in a defensive play. The Negro leagues were United States professional baseball leagues comprising teams of African Americans and, to a lesser extent, Latin Americans. The term may be used broadly to include professional black teams outside the leagues and it may be used narrowly for the seven relatively successful leagues beginning in 1920 that are sometimes termed "Negro Major Leagues". Detroit Stars (1937) Players
The Detroit Stars were an American baseball team in the Negro league baseball, Negro leagues and played at historic Mack Park. The Stars had winning seasons every year but two, but were never able to secure any championships. Among their best players was Baseball Hall of Famer Turkey Stearnes. Founding Founded in 1919 by Tenny Blount with the help of Rube Foster, owner and manager of the Chicago American Giants, the Detroit Stars immediately established themselves as one of the most powerful teams in the West. Akron Black Tyrites
The Akron Black Tyrites were a Negro league baseball team that played out another team's schedule for a portion of a single season. They were based in Akron, Ohio, and were a member team of the Negro National League (II). They are also known as the Akron Grays. The Columbus Blue Birds finished last in the first half of the 1933 season, were disbanded and ended up merging with the Tyrites, one of the top independent Negro league teams of their day.
