Felipe Trigo Awards
The Felipe Trigo Awards ( es, Premios Felipe Trigo, links=no) are annual literary honors created in 1981 on the initiative of the City Council of Villanueva de la Serena, Spain. On 24 November 1980, the Municipal Assembly agreed to institute it as a tribute to the writer Felipe Trigo, born in the city in 1864. It is given in two categories: Novel and Short Narrative. A third, Short Narrative by Extremaduran Author, was added in the award's 2nd edition, but then discontinued in its 8th edition in 1988. The economic endowment of the Felipe Trigo Award is currently €6,000 for Short Narrative (originally 200,000 pesetas) and €20,000 for Novel (originally 400,000 pesetas). It is granted in December, and the winning works are published by Editorial Algaida. Villanueva De La Serena
Villanueva de la Serena is a city in the Province of Badajoz, Extremadura, Spain. It has a population of 26,111 (2010) and forms part of a larger urban area with the neighbouring town of Don Benito. History Founded in the thirteenth century as ''Aldeanueva de Medellín'', the city was an important centre for the Mesta in the Middle Ages. It was the birthplace of Pedro de Valdivia who conquered Chile for the Spanish crown. By 2021, the municipal government of Villanueva de la Serena worked alongside that of Don Benito to fuse the two neighbouring municipalities into a single one, paving the way for a 2022 non-binding consultation. On 8 November 2021, the Council of Ministers sanctioned the celebration of the consultation, to be held on 20 February 2022. Dolores Soler-Espiauba Conesa (born Cartagena, Spain, 1935) is a Spanish writer, winning awards for her novels. Raúl Argemí (1946–present) is an Argentinean writer, resident of Buenos Aires, after 12 years living in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. He is a crime writer. Felipe Trigo
Felipe Trigo (13 February 1864 in Villanueva de la Serena, Badajoz – 2 September 1916 in Madrid) was a 20th-century Spain, Spanish writer. He studied Medicine in Madrid and practised in several villages in Extremadura. He later become a member of Military Health Corps and he was appointed to Philippines, where he was about to die and he had to be repatriated as a Lieutenant-Colonel. In 1900, he quit medicine to concentrate in literature. Eroticism was the main subject of his works, but he was also interested in social denounces and critics about illiteracy and caciquism with peasants in Spain and specially in the Extremadura of his times in particular. Felipe Trigo committed suicide in 1916 for unclear reasons. Legacy In 1981, the City Council of Villanueva de la Serena created the Felipe Trigo Awards in his honor to recognize the year's best novel and short narrative.
