Fefita La Grande
Manuela Josefa Cabrera Taveras (born September 18, 1943), known as Fefita La Grande, is a Dominican accordionist and the most recognized female performer of typical merengue, a more rural variation of merengue, the main musical genre of the Dominican Republic. She is one of the greatest representatives of the " typical genre" along with artists such as Tatico Henríquez, Pedro Reynoso, El Ciego de Nagua, Francisco Peralta, Rafaelito Román, Francisco Ulloa, among others. Her version of the song "La chiflera" is an emblem of typical music.'' Biography She was born in a small town in the province of Santiago Rodríguez in the Dominican Republic. Sabaneta, Dominican Republic
San Ignacio de Sabaneta is the capital and a municipality of Santiago Rodriguez in the northwestern part of the Dominican Republic. It is usually called only ''Sabaneta'' or ''Santiago Rodríguez''. History The town was founded in 1844 by Santiago Rodríguez and the brothers, Alejandro and José Bueno. The city laid in the centre of a small savanna, in Spanish, Sabaneta. In 1854, the town was elevated to the category of Military Post and in 1858 it was incorporated into a municipality of the Santiago province. Sabaneta was the centre of the fight against the Spanish soldiers during the Restoration War (1863–1865). When 1879 Monte Cristi became a province, San Ignacio de Sabaneta was made a municipality of that new province. When the new province of Santiago Rodríguez was created in 1948, San Ignacio de Sabaneta was made the head municipality of the province. Tambora (Dominican Drum)
The Dominican ''tambora'' (from the Spanish word ''tambor'', meaning "drum") is a two headed drum played in merengue music. In many countries, especially the Dominican Republic, tamboras were made from salvaged rum barrels. Tambora players are called ''tamboreros''. Types There are three types of tambora for the merengue style of music. The oldest kind is the rope-tuned tambora with black-colored heads. This is seen more in folkloric music of the Dominican republic. The second type, as made by modern companies, is bolt-tuned with conga heads. This kind usually has metal or wooden rims to hit as a filler for rhythms, sounding, if one strikes it correctly, something reminiscent of a wood block. This type can also be tuned to higher pitches and can sound like a conga. Maridalia Hernández (born August 19, 1959) is a Dominican singer. Early life and education Maridalia Hernández was born in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, in 1959. She was fully trained as a lyrical singer, pianist, cellist and music teacher. Career She made her live debut as a pop singer in 1981, while participating in a musical called ''Sonido Para Una Imagen'' (Sound for an Image). Later, she was cast to raving reviews as Maria Magdalena in the Spanish version of '' Jesus Christ Superstar''. Krency Garcia, better known as El Prodigio, is a famous merengue típico accordionist from Cabrera, Dominican Republic. He is known throughout the genre for his rapid instrumental solos, his origination of fusion in merengue tipico with genres like jazz, and his rivalry with fellow accordionists, Geovanny Polanco and Kerube (head of the tipico band Kerubanda).
