Federica Bonsignori
Federica Bonsignori (born 20 November 1967) is a former professional tennis player from Italy. Biography Bonsignori started competing professionally in 1984. She won her first Grand Slam match at the 1986 French Open when she had a double bagel win over Amanda Tobin. This was one of four occasions in her career that she reached the second round at Roland Garros, which was her best Grand Slam event. In 1987, she upset top seed Manuela Maleeva en route to the quarter-finals of the Belgian Open and reached the semi-finals of the Clarins Open in Paris. Across 1988 and 1989, she had a minimal impact on tour, unable to progress past the second round in any WTA Tour tournament. Bonsignori won her only WTA tournament title at the 1990 Estoril Open. An unseeded player, she managed wins over three seeds, Angeliki Kanellopoulou, Isabel Cueto and Sabine Hack, before accounting for Laura Garrone in an all-Italian final. The WTA Tour is a worldwide top-tier tennis tour for women organized by the Women's Tennis Association. The second-tier tour is the WTA 125K series, and third-tier is the ITF Women's Circuit. The men's equivalent is the ATP Tour. The Italy women's national tennis team represents Italy in international women's tennis and is directed by the Federazione Italiana Tennis. The Virginia Slims of Houston is a defunct WTA Tour affiliated tennis tournament played from 1970 to 1995. It was held in Houston, Texas in the United States and played on Carpet court, indoor carpet courts from 1970 to 1984 and on Clay court, outdoor clay courts from 1985 to 1995. The event has the distinction of being the first-ever tournament on the professional women's circuit, which would eventually become the WTA Tour. In 1971, the event served as the series WTA Tour Championships, Championships of the inaugural Virginia Slims Tour. Katerina Georgieva Maleeva ( bg, Катерина Георгиева Малеева; born 7 May 1969) is a former top 10 Bulgarian tennis player. She won eleven singles and two doubles WTA Tour titles. Her best position in the WTA rankings was No. 6 in 1990. Biography Born in Sofia, Maleeva is the second oldest of the three children of Georgi Maleev and Yuliya Berberyan. Her mother came from an Armenian family, which found refuge in Bulgaria after the 1896 Armenian massacres in the Ottoman Empire, and was the best Bulgarian tennis player in the 1960s. After she retired from professional tennis in the 1970s, Berberyan started a coaching career.
