Federalist Party (France)
The Federalist Party (, PF) was a French European federalist political party, founded in 1995 by Jean-Philippe Allenbach. In 2011 it joined forces with the Europe United Party and became the European Federalist Party. The French section European Federalist Party is currently led by Yves Gernigon. The party ran in the 2004 regional elections, running lists in four regions. In Ile-de-France, it won 2.51% in association with Ecology Generation. In 1998 regional elections its lists had obtained between 0.52 and 3.87 percent. In the 2004 EU Parliamentary elections it ran lists in all eight constituencies, with its best results coming from East France and Île-de-France with 0.02% in each of the regions. After failing to gather the required 500 endorsements to run, Christian Chavrier, the leader of Federalist Party in 2007, endorsed the Union for French Democracy (UDF) candidate François Bayrou in the 2007 presidential election. Federalism
Federalism is a combined or compound mode of government that combines a general government (the central or "federal" government) with regional governments (Province, provincial, State (sub-national), state, Canton (administrative division), cantonal, territorial, or other sub-unit governments) in a single political system, dividing the powers between the two. Federalism in the modern era was first adopted in the unions of states during the Old Swiss Confederacy. 2004 French Regional Elections
Regional elections in were held in France on 21 and 28 March 2004. At stake were the presidencies of each of France's 26 regions which, although they do not have legislative powers, manage sizeable budgets. The results were a triumph for the parties of the left, led by the French Socialist Party (PS) in alliance with minor parties including the French Communist Party (PCF), the Left Radical Party (PRG) and The Greens (''Les Verts''). The left has usually fared moderately well in regional elections, but this was their best result since the regional system was introduced. The left won control of twenty of the twenty-two regions of metropolitan France, defeating the parties of the mainstream right, the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and the Union for French Democracy (UDF), and the extreme right National Front (FN). Ecology Generation
Ecology Generation (french: Génération écologie) is one of the four green parties in France, along with Europe Ecology – The Greens (), the Independent Ecological Movement (), and Cap Écologie. Founded in 1990 by Brice Lalonde, Environment Minister, upon the suggestion of President François Mitterrand, it describes itself as a club with cross-party alliances of green-minded politicians and public servants. It moved away from the "presidential majority" in 1992, when Brice Lalonde left the cabinet. 1998 French Regional Elections
Regional elections were held in France on 15 March 1998. At stake were the presidencies of each of France's 26 ''regions'', which, though they don't have legislative autonomy, manage sizeable budgets. The parliamentary right, led by the conservative Gaullist Rally for the Republic and the centre-right Union for French Democracy won the presidency of 15 of the 26 regions, the rest were won by the French Socialist Party and its allies (Communists, Greens, Radicals). The far-right National Front obtained good results, increasing its number of seats. The far-left and Hunting, Fishing, Nature, Tradition also won seats on various regional councils. The election was held using a one-round proportional system (with a 5% threshold), later abolished for the 2004 elections. Elections to the European Parliament were held in France on 13 June 2004. The opposition Socialist Party made substantial gains, although this was mainly at the expense of minor parties. The governing Union for a Popular Movement and Union for French Democracy also made gains. Union For French Democracy
The Union for French Democracy (french: Union pour la démocratie française, UDF) was a centre to centre-right political party in France. It was founded in 1978 as an electoral alliance to support President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing in order to counterbalance the Gaullist preponderance over the political right in France. This name was chosen due to the title of Giscard d'Estaing's 1976 book, ''Démocratie française''. The party brought together Christian democrats, liberal-radicals, and non-Gaullist conservatives, and described itself as centrist. The founding parties of the UDF were Giscard's Republican Party (PR), the Centre of Social Democrats (CDS), the Radical Party (Rad.), the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Perspectives and Realities Clubs (CPR). François Bayrou
François René Jean Lucien Bayrou (; born 25 May 1951) is a French politician who has presided over the Democratic Movement (MoDem) since he founded it in 2007. A centrist, he was a candidate in the 2002, 2007 and 2012 presidential elections. He has also presided over the European Democratic Party (EDP) since 2004. From 1993 to 1997, he was Minister of National Education in three successive governments.
