Feature (band)
Feature was a London-based indie rock trio formed in 2012 by Jen Calleja (drums and vocals, also of Sauna Youth) and Liv Willars (guitar and vocals), with Heather Perkins (bass and vocals) joining in 2014. The band released two EPs, a split single with Perkins' other band Slowcoaches, and an LP, before breaking up in 2017. History Feature was formed in London by drummer/vocalist Jen Calleja (also of the band Sauna Youth) and guitarist/vocalist Liv Willars in 2012. They played as a duo for two years before they were joined by bassist Heather Perkins of the band Slowcoaches, with whom they released a split single in 2015, as well as touring together. The band also played with American groups like Chain and the Gang, Protomartyr, and the Julie Ruin, and appeared at Supernormal Festival in Oxfordshire. Post-punk
Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of punk music that emerged in the late 1970s as musicians departed from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Inspired by punk's energy and DIY ethic but determined to break from rock cliches, artists experimented with styles like funk, electronic music, jazz, and dance music; the production techniques of dub and disco; and ideas from art and politics, including critical theory, modernist art, cinema and literature. These communities produced independent record labels, visual art, multimedia performances and fanzines. Upset The Rhythm
Upset The Rhythm is an independent record label based in London with a varied roster of leftfield artists and bands; they also operate as a diverse DIY live music promoter. Huw Stephens featured Upset The Rhythm as "purveyors of interesting indie" on his BBC Radio 1 show (24 November 2011) as part of his ongoing 'Label Of Love' feature. As of 2015, Upset The Rhythm had 85 releases. History Upset The Rhythm initially formed in 2003 while its members were organising a concert for Deerhoof. By 2015, Upset The Rhythm had organised about 700 shows. Upset The Rhythm shows occur each week in venues across London from smaller DIY hubs like Power Lunches to more established venues like The Roundhouse. Sauna Youth
Sauna Youth is a London-based post-punk band formed by ex-members of punk bands The Steal and Captain Everything! in 2009. They have released three albums, ''Dreamlands'' (2012), ''Distractions'' (2015), and ''Deaths'' (2018), plus various singles. The current members of Sauna Youth also play in the band Monotony, an alter ego of sorts where they all switch instruments. The two bands released a split single on Upset the Rhythm in 2015. History Sauna Youth formed in 2009 with members living between Brighton and London. It catalogs more than three million album entries and 30 million tracks, as well as information on musicians and bands. Ian Svenonius
Ian F Svenonius is an American musician and singer of various Washington, D.C.-based punk bands including Nation of Ulysses, the Make-Up, Weird War, XYZ, Escape-ism, and Chain and the Gang. Between his numerous projects, Svenonius has released more than 22 full-length albums and over 20 singles, EPs, and splits. A published author and online talk show host, Svenonius' projects share a tongue-in-cheek, radical left political ideology. His first band, Nation of Ulysses, which released its first record in 1990, was highly influential in the punk scene but dissolved in 1992. After a short-lived side-project called Cupid Car Club, Svenonius formed the Make-Up in 1995, who combined garage rock, soul, and liberation theology to make a new genre they dubbed "Gospel Yeh-Yeh". Protomartyr (band)
Protomartyr is an American rock band formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 2010. The band consists of Joe Casey (vocals), Greg Ahee (guitar), Alex Leonard (drums), and Scott Davidson (bass). In 2020, Kelley Deal joined the band in a touring capacity, providing additional keyboards, guitar and backing vocals. The Julie Ruin is an American band formed in 2010 in New York City. The band rehearses in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and records at Oscilloscope and Figure 8 Recording in Brooklyn. Band members include Carmine Covelli, Sara Landeau, Kathleen Hanna, Kathi Wilcox, and Kenny Mellman. In December 2010, the Julie Ruin previewed a performance at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, New York.
