Faust (1960 Film)
''Faust'' is a 1960 West German theatrical film directed by Peter Gorski. It is based on Goethe's ''Faust'' (1808) and adapted from the theater production at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. It stars Peter Gorski's adoptive father Gustaf Gründgens as Mephistopheles and Will Quadflieg as Faust, and was chosen as West Germany's official submission to the 33rd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, but did not manage to receive a nomination. The film also won a Deutscher Filmpreis (transl.: German Movie Award) for an ''Outstanding Documentary or Cultural Film'' in 1961. Peter Gorski
Peter Gorski, (7 September 1921 – 3 March 2007) was a German film director. Early life Peter Gorski was born in Berlin, and was adopted in 1949 by the famous German actor Gustaf Gründgens. Career Gorski started his career in 1955 as the assistant director for the film '' Ripening Youth''. In 1960 Gorski directed the film ''Faust'', based on Goethe's ''Faust'' and adapted from the theater production at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg. The film starred his adoptive father Gustaf Gründgens as Mephistopheles, and was chosen as West Germany's official submission to the 33rd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, but did not manage to receive a nomination. This is a list of submissions to the 33rd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country. For the 33rd Academy Awards, twelve films were submitted in the category Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Brazil submitted a film to the competition for the first time.
