"Fatzcarraldo" is the fourteenth episode of the twenty-eighth season of the American animated television series ''The Simpsons'', and the 610th episode of the series overall. It aired in the United States on Fox on February 12, 2017. The title is a spoof of the 1982 film ''Fitzcarraldo''. This episode was dedicated in memory of animator Sooan Kim. Plot After Homer wins a button-counting contest and is allowed to leave work early (a cover for Mr. Burns to hide skeletons in the warehouse), Homer is happy as he heads home but looks horrified when he sees the cars of Marge's sisters in the driveway. Mark Kirkland is an American animation director. He has directed 84 episodes of ''The Simpsons'' since 1990, more than any other director. Career At the age of 13, Kirkland began making super 8 films and working for his father, noted photographer and filmmaker Douglas Kirkland, creating “making of” films for major production companies. This exposure to Hollywood sparked Kirkland's desire to seek a career in the entertainment industry. Kirkland developed an interest in drawing at an early age. At the age of 17, he began studying in the Experimental Animation Program at the California Institute of the Arts for four years, earning a BFA degree. ''Fitzcarraldo'' () is a 1982 West German epic adventure-drama film written, produced and directed by Werner Herzog, and starring Klaus Kinski as would-be rubber baron, Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald, an Irishman known in Peru as Fitzcarraldo, who is determined to transport a steamship over a steep hill to access a rich rubber territory in the Amazon Basin. The film is derived from the historic events of Peruvian rubber baron Carlos Fitzcarrald and his real-life feat of transporting a disassembled steamboat over the Isthmus of Fitzcarrald.
