Two institutions grant the Fastenrath Awards: Fundación Premio Fastenrath awards writers of Spanish nationality and their Spanish works and Premi Fastenrath for Catalan works. Both were instituted with the posthumous legacy of Johannes Fastenrath Hürxthal. Background Luise Goldmann (1858-1914), widow of the publicist and hispanophilian Johannes Fastenrath Hurxthal (Remscheid , 1839 - Cologne, 1908), at the death of her husband, who occurred in Cologne, on March 18, 1908, wanted to institute with her legacy a series of actions in favor of writers in Spanish and Catalan, having two foundations: a. For the «Fastenrath Prize», with a founding capital of 70,000 pts. (in 1908), he conferred on King Alfonso XIII the power to proceed in the best way he considered, always under a foundation that instituted a prize for Spanish writers, with the requirement that he be named Juan Fastenrath as tribute. b. Catalan Language
Catalan (; autonym: , ), known in the Valencian Community and Carche as ''Valencian'' (autonym: ), is a Western Romance language. Emilio García Gómez
Emilio García Gómez, 1st Count of Alixares (4 June 1905 – 31 May 1995) was a Spanish Arabist, literary historian and critic, whose talent as a poet enriched his many translations from Arabic. Life Emilio García Gómez decided to pursue Arabic as a career after attending Arabic language classes taught by Prof. Miguel Asín Palacios at the Complutense University of Madrid. He had been a student of law. In his Arabic studies he was mentored by the professors Julián Ribera y Tarragó, and by Asín. Recipient of a scholarship to Cairo he studied there under Prof. Ahmad Zaki Pasha and the Egyptian writer Taha Husayn. His doctoral thesis on the Alexander legend in the Maghrib won the Fastenrath Prize. In 1930 he became Professor of Arabic at the University of Granada, until he returned to Madrid in 1944. Margarita Nelken
Margarita Nelken (5 July 1894– 5 March 1968) was a Spanish feminist and writer. She was a well known intellectual and a central figure in the earliest Spanish women's movement in the 1930s. Early life and education Nelken was born María Teresa Lea Nelken y Mansberger in Madrid in 1894. Her parents were of German-Jewish origin and owners of a jewellery store. She studied music, painting and languages, and she learned to speak French, German and English besides her native Spanish. Her sister, Carmen Eva Nelken, was an actress and writer. Career and views Nelken wrote books of fiction with a socio-political orientation in the 1920s, including ''La trampa del arenal'' (The sand trap, 1923). Wenceslao Fernández Flórez (1885 in A Coruña, Galicia – 1964 in Madrid) was a popular Galician journalist and novelist of the early 20th century. Gabriel Miró
Gabriel Miró Ferrer (; Alicante, 28 July 1879 – Madrid, 24 May 1930), known as Gabriel Miró, was a Spanish modernist writer. In 1900 he finished his studies in law at the University of Granada and the University of Valencia. He focused mainly on writing novels, but also collaborated to a large number of newspapers such as: ''El Heraldo, Los Lunes de El Imparcial, ABC'' and ''El Sol''. Ángel Valbuena Prat (16 May 1900 – 2 January 1977) was a Spanish philologist and historian. Biography Born in Barcelona, he studied at the University of Barcelona, and later became an assistant professor at the Central University of Madrid. His doctoral thesis, ''Los Autos Sacramentales de Calderón'', earned him various awards.
