Fashion Show Mall
Fashion Show is a shopping mall located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. It was developed by Summa Corporation and Ernest W. Hahn, the latter also serving as general contractor. Construction began on March 15, 1979, and the project was built at a cost of $74 million. Fashion Show Mall opened on February 14, 1981, becoming the first major shopping center on the Strip. It was also the third mall to open in the Las Vegas Valley. Its success prompted the construction of other retail centers on the Strip, including the Forum Shops. The Rouse Company took over ownership in the 1990s and later launched a $1 billion renovation and expansion, which concluded in 2003. The project included new stores and restaurants, as well as a retractable runway for fashion shows. Robinsons-May was a chain of department stores operating in Southern California, Arizona and Nevada, from 1993 until 2006. It was created when May Department Stores combined two of its chains, May Company California and J. W. Robinson's chains. May Company California was a chain of department stores operating in Southern California and Nevada, with headquarters in North Hollywood, California. It was a subsidiary of May Department Stores and merged with May's other Southern California subsidiary, J. W. Robinson's, in 1993 to form Robinsons-May. Goldwater's Department Store was a department store chain based in Phoenix, Arizona. History Michael Goldwater, the grandfather of U.S. Senator and 1964 presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, established a trading post in 1860 in Gila City, Arizona Territory. In 1872, he moved to Phoenix. Associated Dry Goods Corp. acquired Goldwater's in 1963 and expanded it to nine stores in the following decades, establishing stores in Tucson, Albuquerque and Las Vegas markets. In 1986, May Department Stores acquired Associated and in 1989 it dissolved the Goldwater's division. Seven of its stores were rebranded as parts of the J. W. Diamond's was a department store chain headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. Originally named The Boston Store, it was founded in 1897 by Nathan and Issac Diamond, Jewish immigrants who had earlier begun a dry-goods mercantile in El Paso, it was renamed Diamond's in 1947 in honor of the store's 50th anniversary. The Grand Canal Shoppes is an upscale shopping mall inside The Venetian Hotel & Casino and The Palazzo on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. The mall was opened along with the Venetian in 1999. The mall has indoor canals, where gondolas take people around the mall. The mall is anchored by a flagship, high-fashion Barneys New York store and contains many designer and upscale boutiques. Live performances can be found throughout the mall. In 2019, Barneys New York closed its doors as the department store filed for bankruptcy. The mall had 20 million visitors a year in 2008.
