Fashion Group
The Fashion Group International (FGI) is a global, non-profit, professional organization founded in 1930 in New York City to benefit the fashion industry. FGI currently has over 5000 members in the fashion industry including apparel, accessories, beauty and home. FGI is divided into chapters in cities all over the world (Canada, Colombia, England, México, Dominican Republic Seoul), with the major chapter in New York City. History FGI began in 1928 when Edna Woolman Chase, the Editor-of-Chief of Vogue, gathered seventeen women for lunch in a New York restaurant. The group was formed officially in 1930 in New York City. Founding and charter members included Elizabeth Arden, Julia Coburn, Eleanor Roosevelt, Helena Rubinstein, Lilly Daché, Edith Head, Mary Brooks Picken, Claire McCardell, and Tobé Coller Davis. Tobe Coller Davis (June 12, 1888 – December 25, 1962), more commonly known as Miss Tobe or Mrs Tobe Davis, was an American fashion authority and columnist. She founded The Tobé-Coburn School for Fashion Careers (now the Wood Tobé-Coburn School) and the Tobe Report, a fashion merchandising consulting company. Claire McCardell
Claire McCardell (May 24, 1905 – March 22, 1958) was an American fashion designer of ready-to-wear clothing in the twentieth century. She is credited with the creation of American sportswear. Early life McCardell was the eldest of four children born to Eleanor and Adrian McCardell in Frederick, Maryland. Adrian was a Maryland state senator and president of the Frederick County National Bank. As a child, McCardell earned the nickname "Kick" for her ability to keep the boys from pushing her around. Fascinated by fashion from a young age, McCardell wanted to move to New York City to study fashion design at age 16. Mary Brooks Picken (August 6, 1886, Arcadia, KS – March 8, 1981, Williamsport, PA) was an American author of 96 books on needlework, sewing, and textile arts. Her ''Fashion Dictionary'', published by Funk and Wagnalls in 1957, is the first dictionary in the English language to be published by a woman. Career She founded the Woman's Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences in Scranton, Pennsylvania. An expert on fashion, Picken was an authority on dress, fabric, design, and sewing.
