Farloe Melody
Farloe Melody was a racing greyhound during the 1990s. He won the 1992 English Greyhound Derby and was the 1992 Greyhound of the Year and twice Irish Greyhound Derby finalist. Racing career 1991 Farloe Melody came to prominence in 1991 after winning the Easter Cup at Shelbourne Park, Dundalk International at Dundalk Ramparts Greyhound Stadium, finishing runner-up to kennelmate Ardfert Mick by a neck in the Champion Stakes final and reaching final of the Irish Laurels. He had been purchased by John Davis and Dave Tickner during the Easter Cup competition. He was part of a large team that trainer Matt O'Donnell entered for the 1991 Respond Irish Greyhound Derby at Shelbourne. After impressing throughout the competition and winning quarter final and semi final (both containing Ardfert Mick) he merited being 6-4 favourite for the final but made a hash of the break from the traps and finished in fifth place behind Ardfert Mick. Laurels (Irish Greyhounds)
The Laurels is a greyhound racing competition held annually at Curraheen Park Greyhound Stadium located in Bishopstown, west of Cork, County Cork, Ireland. It was hosted by the old Cork Greyhound Stadium from 1944 to 1999 but inevitably continued to be held at the new track after it opened. It is a prestigious event targeted by many of Ireland's leading greyhounds and is an integral part of the Irish greyhound racing calendar. Tico (greyhound)
Tico was one of the sports leading racing greyhounds during the 1980s and a winner of the English Greyhound Derby. Whelping and rearing He was whelped 6 February 1984, from a mating between The Stranger and Derry Linda. He was bred by Jim Morrissey of Carrick-on-Suir. As a puppy he was moved to a pig farm and reared by Sean and Michael Dunphy of Portlaw. Racing 1985 Tico made his debut at Clonmel Greyhound Stadium on 8 July 1985 when owned by Morrissey and won by ten lengths. He was purchased by Alan Smee for £5,000 and sent to trainer Arthur Hitch, who had recently left Oxford Stadium for Slough Stadium. 1992 Irish Greyhound Derby
The 1992 Irish Greyhound Derby took place during August and September with the final being held at Shelbourne Park in Dublin on 26 September 1992. The winner Manx Treasure won £50,000 and was trained by Michael O'Sullivan and owned and bred by John Guildford in the Isle of Man. The race was sponsored by the Kerry Group's dog food product 'Respond' who had increased the winner's prize by an extra £20,000. Wimbledon Stadium
Wimbledon Stadium, also known as Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, was a greyhound racing track located in Wimbledon in southwest London, England. It also hosted stock car and other small circuit motor racing events, and until 2005 hosted motorcycle speedway. The stadium hosted the English Greyhound Derby every year between 1985 and 2016. Facing declining attendances and with no renovations undertaken for many years, the stadium was put up for sale by the owners, the Greyhound Racing Association, and closed permanently in March 2017. The site was purchased by Galliard Homes Limited, in order to build 600 new apartments and a new football stadium, the new Plough Lane, for AFC Wimbledon. Spanish Battleship (August 1951 - July 1962) was a male fawn and brindle greyhound. He is celebrated as one of Ireland's greatest racing greyhounds. Early life Spanish Battleship was whelped in August 1951 as part of a litter of seven. His owner Tim 'Chubb' O'Connor had leased a bitch called Ballyseedy Memory from breeder Tadgh Drummond so that he could mate her with Spanish Chestnut (the half brother of 1949 Irish Greyhound Derby champion Spanish Lad). After the litter was born he was reared by Sheila O’Connor, sister of Chubb O'Connor. The greyhound avoided being sold to the UK after being bitten by a pig and therefore stayed in Ireland to recover. Matt O'Donnell (greyhound Trainer)
Matt O'Donnell was an Irish greyhound trainer. He is a three-time winner of the Irish Greyhound Derby and one-time winner of the English Greyhound Derby and is regarded as one of Ireland's all-time leading trainers. Career O'Donnell started training in 1968 and first came to prominence in the late 1970s with 'Malange', reaching the 1978 St Leger final at Wembley and winning the 1978 Irish St Leger at Limerick. After twelve years of success, he finally won the Irish Derby with The Other Toss in 1990.
