Farley Drew Caminetti
Farley Drew Caminetti (July 1, 1886 – December 19, 1945) was charged with violation of the Mann Act and his case was settled by the United States Supreme Court as ''Caminetti v. United States''. Biography He was born on July 1, 1886, in California, the son of Anthony Caminetti, the Commissioner General of Immigration. He and Maury I. Diggs took their mistresses, Lola Norris and Marsha Warrington respectively, from Sacramento, California, to Reno, Nevada. Their wives informed the police, and both men were arrested in Reno. At trial on September 5, 1913, he was found guilty of one count of violation of the Mann Act. Mann Act
The White-Slave Traffic Act, also called the Mann Act, is a United States federal law, passed June 25, 1910 (ch. 395, ; ''codified as amended at'' ). It is named after Congressman James Robert Mann of Illinois. In its original form the act made it a felony to engage in interstate or foreign commerce transport of "any woman or girl for the purpose of prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose". Its primary stated intent was to address prostitution, immorality, and human trafficking, particularly where trafficking was for the purposes of prostitution. It was one of several acts of protective legislation aimed at moral reform during the Progressive Era. In practice, its ambiguous language about "immorality" resulted in it being used to criminalize even consensual sexual behavior between adults. Anthony Caminetti (July 30, 1854 – November 17, 1923) was an American lawyer and politician who served two terms as a United States representative from California from 1891 to 1895. Biography Born in Jackson, California, Caminetti was the son of Italian emigrants. He attended the public schools of his native county, the grammar schools in San Francisco, and the University of California, Berkeley. He also studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1877 and commenced practice in Jackson. He was the district attorney of Amador County from 1878 until 1882. He married Ellen Martin, a native of California. She descended from the distinguished Madison family. Her great-grandmother was President Madison's own cousin.
