Farid Habib
Farid Ishak Habib ( ar, فريد حبيب; 8 January 1935 – 31 May 2012) was a Lebanese politician and a member of the Lebanese Forces party. He was a member of the Strong Republic bloc in the Lebanese Parliament as a representative of Koura district since the 2005 legislative elections. He was one of the two Lebanese Forces representatives in Qornet Shehwan Gathering, along with Eddy Abillammaa. Early life and education Habib was born to an Greek Orthodox family from Kousba. He attended Tripoli Evangelical High School and graduated from the American University of Beirut in 1956 with a bachelor's degree in literature. Career From 1956 to 1963, Habib worked as an assistant for the public relations manager of The Trans-Arabian Pipeline Company (TAPLINE). He also held the position of staff trainer during this period. Kousba ( ar, كوسبا) is a village in Koura District, in the Northern Governorate of Lebanon. The population are Greek Orthodox. History According to the elderly residents of this town, the name Kousba comes from the word "Hidden" because of how it lies between mountains. The Lebanese Forces ( ar, القوات اللبنانية '')'' is a Lebanon, Lebanese Christianity in Lebanon, Christian-based political party and Lebanese Forces (militia), former militia during the Lebanese Civil War. It currently holds 19 of the 128 seats in Lebanon's Parliament of Lebanon, parliament and is therefore the largest party in parliament. Lebanese General Elections 2009
Parliamentary elections were held in Lebanon on 7 June 2009 to elect all 128 members of the Parliament of Lebanon. Background Before the election, the voting age was to be lowered from 21 to 18 years, but as this requires a constitutional amendment, it did not happen before the election. Allocation of seats Following a compromise reached in the Doha Agreement in May 2008 between the government and opposition, a new electoral law was put in place, as shown in the table below. It was passed on 29 September 2008. Results Preliminary results indicated that the turnout had been as high as 55%. The March 14 Alliance garnered 71 seats in the 128-member parliament, while the March 8 Alliance won 57 seats. This result is virtually the same as the result from the election in 2005. The party played a major role in the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990).
