Far West Football League
The Western Eyre Football League (WEFL), formerly Far West Football League (FWFL), is an Australian rules football competition based in the Ceduna area of the Eyre Peninsula region of South Australia, Australia. As of March 2021, the league includes clubs in Ceduna, Thevenard, Koonibba Aboriginal community, Penong (Western United FC), Streaky Bay (West Coast Hawks) and Wirrulla. It is an affiliated member of the South Australian National Football League. Brief history The County Of Way Football Association was formed in 1909, with founding clubs including Charra, Denial Bay, Goode, Koonibba, Murat and Penong. Fowlers Bay also wished to join the league but was denied entry due to excessive travel distance. In 1948 The league changed its name to Murat Bay Football League changed and then Far West Football League in 1962. Mortlock Shield
The Mortlock Shield Championship, known for commercial reasons as the Port Lincoln Bendigo & Adelaide Bank, Bendigo Bank Mortlock Shield Championship and commonly known as just the Mortlock Shield is an annual Australian rules football competition based in Port Lincoln, South Australia. The competition takes place every year at Centenary Oval and it consists of a league with representative teams of leagues from the Eyre Peninsula and beyond. It is an affiliated competition of the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Eltham Football Club
Eltham Football Club is an Australian rules football club in Eltham, Victoria, currently competing in the Northern Football League. History The Eltham Football Club began playing social matches at nearby Kangaroo Ground, Diamond Creek and Greensborough from around 1904. Phil McGavin was listed as Secretary in 1904. In 1907, Police Constable "Ike" Stephens convened a meeting with the idea of providing entertainment for the lads and an outlet for their surplus energy. . Koonibba is a locality and an associated Aboriginal community in South Australia located about northwest of the state capital of Adelaide and about northwest of the municipal seat in Ceduna and north of the Eyre Highway. The settlement grew around the Koonibba Mission (1901–1975). The Koonibba Football Club, founded in 1906, is the oldest Aboriginal football club still in existence. Koonibba Test Range is a rocket testing facility established in 2019. The Mid West Football League was an Australian rules football competition based in the Eyre Peninsula region of South Australia, Australia. It was wound up prior to the 2021 season after Wudinna and Central Eyre merged and transferred to the Eastern Eyre Football League. Koonibba Roosters
Koonibba Football Club is an Australian rules football club situated in the small Aboriginal Australian community of Koonibba, South Australia. Founded in 1906, it is the oldest surviving Aboriginal football club in Australia. The players are known as the Koonibba Roosters. The Lutheran missionaries at Koonibba Mission (founded in 1901), helped the residents of the mission to establish the football club, which played against teams from Denial Bay, Charra, Penong and Ceduna. At the celebrations for its 100th year in existence, 23 of its players past and present were added to the club's Team of the Century. Fowlers Bay, South Australia
Fowlers Bay, formerly known as Yalata, is a bay, town and locality in the Australian state of South Australia located about north-west of the state capital, Adelaide. The town is located on Port Eyre, at the western end of the larger Fowlers Bay. It was named Yalata after Yalata station, established in the 1860s and stretching from the Nullarbor Plain across to near Streaky Bay on the Eyre Peninsula, whose homestead was located on the hill nearby. The name Yalata now belongs to a small Aboriginal community further west, which was also situated on station land. Situated on the Nullarbor Plain, Fowlers Bay was once an active port and a gateway to the western reaches of the continent, but fell into decline in the 1960s and 1970s. However a revitalised tourist industry started bringing more tourists to the town from the 1980s onwards.
