Far Niente
Far Niente Winery is a winery based in Oakville, California, located within the Oakville AVA appellation. It was founded in 1885 by John Benson, but abandoned during Prohibition in 1919. The property was restored by Gil Nickel in 1979. The winery now produces wines from Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The name of the winery comes from the Italian phrase '' dolce far niente'', meaning "the sweetness of doing nothing". Oakville AVA
The Oakville AVA is an American Viticultural Area located within Napa Valley AVA and centered on the town of Oakville, California. The appellation extends over a flat expanse of well-drained gravel soil between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. Oakville AVA is known for its success with Bordeaux varietals, which have produced wines of rich texture, firm tannins, and notes of mint and herbs. Geography and climate The soil of the Oakville AVA is the result of sedimentary deposits from the hills that form Napa Valley. The soil is gravelly and sandy, with exceptionally good drainage. Gil Nickel (1939 – October 30, 2003) was an American vintner. He was the owner of the historic Far Niente Winery in the Napa Valley.
