Fano Airfield
Fano Airport is an airport in Italy . located 1 km southeast of Fano and 10 km northwest of Mondolfo in the province of Pesaro and Urbino in the Marche region of Italy. The airport is used for general aviation, with no commercial airline service. World War II During World War II Fano Airfield was built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers as a temporary wartime airfield with a hard earth or Marsden Matting, pierced steel planking (PSP) runway and parking apron. With few or no permanent structures, tents were used for ground support operations and personnel billeting. It was used as an operational airfield by the USAAF Twelfth Air Force, Twelfth and Fifteenth Air Forces in late 1944 and in 1945 until the end of the war. With the withdrawal of the US forces, the facility was turned over to the local government in late 1945. Fano
Fano is a town and ''comune'' of the province of Pesaro and Urbino in the Marche region of Italy. It is a beach resort southeast of Pesaro, located where the ''Via Flaminia'' reaches the Adriatic Sea. It is the third city in the region by population after Ancona and Pesaro. History An ancient town of Marche, it was known as Fanum Fortunae after a temple of Fortuna located there. Its first mention in history dates from 49 BC, when Julius Caesar held it, along with Pisaurum and Ancona. Caesar Augustus established a '' colonia'', and built a wall, some parts of which remain. In 2 AD Augustus also built an arch (which is still standing) at the entrance to the town. Marsden Matting
Marston Mat, more properly called pierced (or perforated) steel planking (PSP), is standardized, perforated steel matting material developed by the United States at the Waterways Experiment Station shortly before World War II, primarily for the rapid construction of temporary runways and landing strips (also misspelled as Marsden matting). The nickname came from Marston, North Carolina, adjacent to Camp Mackall airfield where the material was first used. Description Pierced (pressed, steel planking, named after the manufacturing process) steel planking consisted of steel strips with punched lightening holes in it. These holes were in rows, and a formation of ''U''-shaped channels between the holes.
