Adam Falkner is an American author, poet, artist, and educator. Falkner is a Pushcart Prize nominee. His work has appeared in ''The New York Times'', and he has been a featured performer at President Barack Obama's Grassroots Ball at the First inauguration of Barack Obama, 2009 Presidential Inauguration. Education Falkner is from Ann Arbor, Michigan, and attended the University of Michigan as an undergraduate student. He holds a MA in English from Brooklyn College, and a PhD in English & Education from Columbia University. Thomas Falkner
Thomas Falkner (6 October 1707 – 30 January 1784) was an English Jesuit missionary, explorer and physician, active in the Patagonia region for nearly forty years. His primary work, ''The Description of Patagonia'', was written towards the idea of English colonization (similar to Mungo Park and other explorers of his era), but it remains valuable as a record of early life, flora and fauna of the region. He is credited with recording the first fossil in present-day Argentina. Life He was the son of Thomas Falkner, a Manchester apothecary, and had Calvinist, maybe Scottish heritage. ''Falkner'' (1837) is the penultimate book published by the author Mary Shelley. Like Shelley's earlier novel ''Lodore'' (1835), it charts a young woman's education under a tyrannical father figure. Plot As a six-year-old orphan, Elizabeth Raby prevents Rupert Falkner from committing suicide; Falkner then adopts her and brings her up to be a model of virtue. However, she falls in love with Gerald Neville, whose mother Falkner had unintentionally driven to her death years before. When Falkner is finally acquitted of murdering Neville's mother, Elizabeth's female values subdue the destructive impulses of the two men she loves, who are reconciled and unite with Elizabeth in domestic harmony. Reception ''Falkner'' is the only one of Shelley's novels in which the heroine's agenda triumphs. Falkner Glacier (), is an east-flowing valley glacier, long, located south of Oakley Glacier in the Mountaineer Range, Victoria Land, Antarctica. The glacier descends steeply to Lady Newnes Bay where it forms a floating glacier tongue. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (2008) after Kelly K. Falkner, Professor of Chemical Oceanography at Oregon State University, who served from 2006 as the first Program Director for the Antarctic Integrated System Science Program in the Division of Antarctic Sciences, Office of Antarctic Programs, National Science Foundation. Falkner Island Light
Falkner Island Light, also known as the Faulkner Island Lighthouse, is a lighthouse in Connecticut, United States, on Falkner Island which is off Guilford Harbor on Long Island Sound. The lighthouse was constructed in 1802 and commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson. The lighthouse has had three keeper's houses: the original house of 1802 was rebuilt in 1851 and then again in 1871. The 1871 keeper's house survived to 1976, when it was destroyed by fire; the Coast Guard repaired and automated the lighthouse two years later. A volunteer group, the Faulkner's Light Brigade, has undertaken the restoration and preservation of the lighthouse since 1991, completing the last major restoration work in March 2011. Access to Falkner Island and the light is restricted during the nesting season of the roseate terns from May to August yearly. Falkner Island (also called Faulkner's Island) is a crescent-shaped island located in Long Island Sound 3 miles (5 km) off Guilford, Connecticut, United States. The island has been visited by the Native Americans for thousands of years. Its Quinnipiac name is "Massancummock", meaning "the place of the great fish hawks". In 1641, Henry Whitfield and the founders of Guilford purchased the island from the Mohegan tribe's sachem, Uncas, as part of a transaction for the land east of East River. Purchased by the Stone family in 1715, it remained in the family until it was sold to the government in 1801. The Falkner Island Light was constructed in 1802 and commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson. The light is the second oldest in Connecticut and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
