Falklands Naval Station
The Falklands Naval Station ( es, Apostadero Naval Malvinas) was the main base of the naval component of Argentina in the Falklands Islands (or ''Malvinas Islands''), during the South Atlantic conflict of 1982. History The Falklands Naval Station was a naval port facility of the Argentine Navy, established on April 2, 1982 by the Sea Fleet Command (Argentina), Sea Fleet Command; having been located in the town of Stanley, Falkland Islands, Port Stanley , the main port and population center of the Falklands Islands. The unit was established in the buildings near the East Pier of Port Stanley, although part of the staff was also commissioned to other places in the capital and the rest of the archipelago. The first and only commanding officer was frigate captain Adolfo Aurelio Gaffoglio and the unit was dissolved de facto with the end of the 1982 conflict. HMS ''Alacrity'' was a Type 21 frigate of the Royal Navy. ''Alacrity'' was active during the Falklands War of 1982, where she sank a supply ship, survived Exocet-missile attacks and rescued men from the '' Atlantic Conveyor''. She was transferred to Pakistan on 1 March 1994 and renamed PNS ''Badr''. Background Built by Yarrow Shipbuilders Ltd, Glasgow, Scotland, she was completed with Exocet launchers in 'B' position. Empresa Líneas Marítimas Argentinas (ELMA) ( en, Argentine Shipping Lines Company) was an Argentine cargo shipping line formed on September 30, 1960, after Juan Perón nationalised the shipping industry. HMS ''Tiger Bay'' was a Z-28-class patrol boat operated by the British Royal Navy, previously the Argentine Coast Guard vessel PNA ''Islas Malvinas'' (GC-82), which was seized at Port Stanley by the crew of on 14 June 1982 following the Argentine surrender during the Falklands War. Operational history ''Islas Malvinas'' was one of 20 vessels of the class built for Argentina by Blohm + Voss of Hamburg, Germany, all of which entered service in 1978. Following the invasion of the Falkland Islands on 2 April 1982, ''Islas Malvinas'' and her sister ship ''Rio Iguazú'', sailed from Puerto Nuevo, Buenos Aires, on 6 April, with stops to take on fuel and supplies at Puerto Madryn and Puerto Deseado. ARA Isla De Los Estados
ARA ''Isla de los Estados'' was an Argentine Navy supply ship sunk during the Falklands War. Ship history The 3,900-ton ship was built in 1975 by the Sociedad Metalúrgica Duro Felguera in Gijón, Spain, as ''Trans-Bética''. She was acquired by the Argentine Navy, renamed after the island east of Tierra del Fuego, and commissioned into the Naval Transport Service on 22 December 1980, being used to maintain a regular transport service between the Falkland Islands and the mainland. Falklands war On 28 March 1982 she sailed from Puerto Deseado to participate in Operation Rosario in the Falkland Islands, arriving on 4 April, three days after the initial landings, to provide transport around the archipelago. ARA ''Bahía Buen Suceso'' (B-6) was a ''Bahía Aguirre''-class 5,000-ton fleet transport that served in the Argentine Navy from 1950 to 1982. She took part in the Falklands War as a logistics ship tasked with resupplying the Argentine garrisons scattered around the Falkland Islands. Captured by British forces on 15 June after running aground at Fox Bay, she sank in deep waters while being used as target practice by the Royal Navy on 21 October 1982. Stanley Harbour
Stanley Harbour is a large inlet on the east coast of East Falkland island. A strait called "the Narrows" leads into Port William. It serves the town of the same name – Stanley – as a harbour. Stanley has sprawled along the south shore of the harbour, to gain shelter from the low hill of Stanley Common. As such this is the busiest waterway of the Falkland Islands and frequently visited by cruise ships, freighters and navy vessels, although this has lessened since the building of the two airports at RAF Mount Pleasant and Port Stanley Airport. It was formerly, and still is to some extent, a repair yard for vessels damaged in South Atlantic storms, or needing to restock. Geography The peninsula on which Canopus Hill, Port Stanley Airport and Gypsy Cove lie, together with a narrow spit of land known as Navy Point, effectively divides Port William from Stanley Harbour. Special Air Service
The Special Air Service (SAS) is a special forces unit of the British Army. It was founded as a regiment in 1941 by David Stirling and in 1950, it was reconstituted as a corps. The unit specialises in a number of roles including counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, direct action and covert reconnaissance. Much of the information about the SAS is highly classified, and the unit is not commented on by either the British government or the Ministry of Defence due to the secrecy and sensitivity of its operations.
