The following is a list of characters that first appeared in the British soap opera ''Emmerdale'' in 2000, by order of first appearance. Adam Forrester Adam Forrester, played by Tim Vincent, made his first appearance on 21 March 2000. Vincent said he was "really excited" when he was approached to play the role. Adam marked his first major acting role since he appeared in '' Dangerfield'' in 1997. Vincent was initially contracted until November 2000, and he commuted between his home in London and the studios in Leeds. The character was introduced during the aftermath of a bus crash, where he earned the respect of the villagers by helping the injured. ''Emmerdale'' (known as ''Emmerdale Farm'' until 1989) is a British soap opera that is broadcast on ITV1. The show is set in Emmerdale (known as Beckindale until 1994), a fictional village in the Yorkshire Dales. Created by Kevin Laffan, ''Emmerdale Farm'' was first broadcast on 16 October 1972. Interior scenes have been filmed at the Leeds Studios since its inception. Exterior scenes were first filmed in Arncliffe in Littondale, and the series may have taken its name from Amerdale, an ancient name of Littondale. Exterior scenes were later shot at Esholt, but are now shot at a purpose-built set on the Harewood estate. The programme is broadcast in every ITV region. Shirley Rosemary Stelfox (11 April 1941 – 7 December 2015) was an English actress, known for her portrayal of the character Edna Birch, a moralising busybody in the ITV soap opera ''Emmerdale'', and as Rose, the vampy sister of the snobby and overbearing Hyacinth Bucket in the first season of the comedy series ''Keeping Up Appearances''. Early life Stelfox was born at Dukinfield, Cheshire, on 11 April 1941. She suffered from bilateral amblyopia, which left her short-sighted. She studied at RADA, where her classmates included Edward Fox, John Thaw, and Sarah Miles. Edna Birch is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera ''Emmerdale'', played by Shirley Stelfox. She made her first appearance during the episode first broadcast on 25 May 2000. Ashley Thomas is a fictional character from the British soap opera ''Emmerdale'', played by John Middleton. He made his first screen appearance during the episode broadcast on 5 December 1996.
