Fairport is a former settlement in Modoc County, California, Modoc County, California. For 20 years, Fairport was a thriving resort community, and the supply and departure depot for the High Grade Mining District in the Warner Mountains. It was located southwest of New Pine Creek, California, New Pine Creek, east of Goose Lake (Oregon-California), Goose Lake, along the Southern Pacific Railroad, north of Cottonwood Creek (California), Cottonwood Creek, at an elevation of 4741 feet (1445 m). A post office operated at Fairport from 1912 to 1932, with a closure in part of 1924. Fairport was a transshipment point for cattle and timber. During its heyday, Fairport competed with nearby New Pine Creek, California, New Pine Creek to become the dominant town between Sugar Hill, California, Sugar Hill and Lakeview, Oregon, but when mining ended and lake waters receded, its usefulness waned. Modoc County () is a county in the far northeast corner of the U.S. state of California. Its population is 8,700 as of the 2020 census, down from 9,686 from the 2010 census. Warner Mountains
The Warner Mountains are an -long mountain range running north–south through northeastern California and extending into southern Oregon in the United States. The range lies within the northwestern corner of the Basin and Range Province, extending from the northeastern corner of Lassen County, California, through eastern Modoc County, California (east of Alturas), and northward into Lake County, Oregon (east of Lakeview). The highest peak in the range is Eagle Peak with an elevation of . The range is part of the Modoc National Forest in California and Fremont National Forest in Oregon. New Pine Creek, California
New Pine Creek (formerly, Pine Creek) is a census-designated place in Modoc County, California. It is located on the Oregon border north-northeast of Willow Ranch, at an elevation of 4842 feet (1476 m). Its population is 87 as of the 2020 census, down from 98 from the 2010 census. A 1913 book described Pine Creek as being on Goose Lake and having a population of 300. Despite straddling the California-Oregon border (part of the community is in Oregon), New Pine Creek is not the northernmost settlement in the state of California. A surveying error in 1868 placed the actual border half a mile south of the statutory border (the 42nd parallel). Delegations from California and Oregon held talks on the issue in 1984 after the error was discovered, but did not ultimately change New Pine Creek's status. The Southern Pacific (or Espee from the railroad initials- SP) was an American Class I railroad network that existed from 1865 to 1996 and operated largely in the Western United States.
