Fairmead is a census-designated place in Madera County, California, United States. It is located northwest of Madera, at an elevation of , and bordered to the northwest by Chowchilla. The population was 1,235 at the 2020 census. A post office operated at Fairmead from 1913 to 1940. The community is impacted by the California High-Speed Rail, as the planned route will dislocate residents. Demographics At the 2010 census Fairmead had a population of 1,447. The racial makeup of Fairmead was 764 (52.8%) White, 88 (6.1%) African American, 23 (1.6%) Native American, 7 (0.5%) Asian, 0 (0.0%) Pacific Islander, 497 (34.3%) from other races, and 68 (4.7%) from two or more races. Bob Helm
Robert Marshall Helm (July 18, 1914 – September 1, 2002) was a jazz clarinetist and saxophonist. Helm was born in Fairmead, California and began playing brass instruments when he was young. He later turned to alto saxophone and by the age of 11 was a professional tenor saxophonist who also played several other instruments. He met Lu Watters and Turk Murphy in 1935 and began playing with them. Five years in the army were followed by returns to the same leaders. He recorded an album as a leader in 1954. Helm continued to play into the 1990s and in 1994–95 recorded another album, ''Hotter than That'', for Stomp Off. POSSLQ ( , plural POSSLQs) is an abbreviation (or acronym) for "Person of Opposite Sex Sharing Living Quarters", a term coined in the late 1970s by the United States Census Bureau as part of an effort to more accurately gauge the prevalence of cohabitation in American households. After the 1980 Census, the term gained currency in the wider culture for a time. After demographers observed the increasing frequency of cohabitation over the 1980s, the Census Bureau began directly asking respondents to their major surveys whether they were "unmarried partners", thus making obsolete the old method of counting cohabitors, which involved a series of assumptions about "Persons of Opposite Sex Sharing Living Quarters". California High-Speed Rail
California High-Speed Rail (also known as CAHSR or CHSR) is a publicly funded high-speed rail system currently under construction in California in the United States. Planning for the project began in 1996, when the California Legislature and Governor Pete Wilson established the California High-Speed Rail Authority and tasked it with creating a plan for the system and presenting it to the voters of the state for approval. In 2008, voters approved Proposition 1A, which established a route connecting all the major population centers of the state, authorized bonds to begin implementation, and set other requirements.
