Fabakary Jatta
Fabakary Tombong Jatta (born 16 November 1952) is a Gambian politician who has served as Speaker of the National Assembly since 2022 and the leader of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) since 2017. Early life and career Jatta was born on 16 November 1952 in Albreda, Gambia. He was educated at Armitage High School and Yundum College (1970–1973). He later worked as a teacher in Bansang from 1973 to 1977 and at Crab Island Junior Secondary School, Banjul from 1977 to 1979, before joining Nigeria Airways, where he became the district accountant. Political career During the Gambian First Republic (1970–1974), he supported the National Convention Party and was taken to court for allegedly registering to vote in two different constituencies, which makes him look antipathy to the People's Progressive Party. Nigeria Airways Ltd., more commonly known as Nigeria Airways, was a Nigerian airline. The company was founded in 1958 after the dissolution of West African Airways Corporation (WAAC). 2022 Gambian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in The Gambia on 9 April 2022 to the 58-member National Assembly. The newly created National People's Party (NPP), led by incumbent President Adama Barrow, emerged victorious, winning 18 seats. The United Democratic Party (UDP) came second, winning 15 seats and becoming the largest opposition party. The National Reconciliation Party (NRP) won four seats, whilst the People's Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) and the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) won two each. Twelve members elected were independents. As President, Barrow could appoint five additional members, and selected four from the NPP and one from the APRC. The People's Progressive Party is a political party in the Gambia. It was the dominant ruling party of the House of Representatives and the presidency from 1962 to 1994. The president throughout this time period was Dawda Jawara. The People's Progressive Party lost power after the 1994 Gambian coup d'état, a military coup led by young, junior military officers. The Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) then became the dominant party of the Gambia. The People's Progressive Party remains active, but lacking the same level of support it garnered in the 20th century. National Convention Party (Gambia)
The National Convention Party (NCP) is a centre-left political party in Gambia. It was the main opposition party between 1975 and 1994. It was originally founded on 7 September 1975 when it first launched at Busumbala by former vice-president Sheriff Mustapha Dibba two weeks after his expulsion from the People's Progressive Party (PPP). It initially welcomed the 1994 coup but was banned from participating in elections in August 1994. Prior to the 1992 elections, the party faced a series of setbacks as many of its leaders rejoin the PPP. Its candidate at the presidential elections of 18 October 2001, Sheriff Dibba, came fourth with 3.77% of the popular vote.
