FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011
The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 were the 41st FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, held 7–20 February in Germany at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria. These were the second Alpine skiing, alpine FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, world championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which previously hosted in FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1978, 1978. It also hosted the first Winter Olympic Games, Olympic alpine skiing competition, a Alpine skiing combined, combined event at the Alpine skiing at the 1936 Winter Olympics, 1936 Winter Olympics. The International Ski Federation, FIS awarded the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, championships on 25 May 2006, in Vilamoura, Portugal. Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Garmisch-Partenkirchen (; Bavarian: ''Garmasch-Partakurch''), nicknamed Ga-Pa, is an Alpine ski town in Bavaria, southern Germany. It is the seat of government of the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen (abbreviated ''GAP''), in the Oberbayern region, which borders Austria. Nearby is Germany's highest mountain, Zugspitze, at above sea level. The town is known as the site of the 1936 Winter Olympic Games, the first to include alpine skiing, and hosts a variety of winter sports competitions. History Garmisch (in the west) and Partenkirchen (in the east) were separate towns for many centuries, and still maintain quite separate identities. Partenkirchen originated as the Roman town of ''Partanum'' on the trade route from Venice to Augsburg and is first mentioned in the year A.D. 15. Vilamoura
Vilamoura is a coastal resort in the Loulé municipality in Algarve, Portugal. It is one of the three corners of Algarve's Golden Triangle. Vilamoura comprises one of the largest single tourist complexes in Europe and with about 2,000 hectares of land. The nearest airport is in Faro. The area previously hosted the annual Almond Blossom Cross Country competition between 1996 and 2003, and the same course was selected as the venue for the 2000 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. History The resort developed around a small harbour, flanked by sandy beaches and close to the Roman ruins of Cerro da Vila. In Roman times this location was important in producing a fish paste known as "garum". The ruins also include the baths in which the mariners used to bathe. Jean-Baptiste Grange
Jean-Baptiste Grange (born 10 October 1984) is a French retired World Cup alpine ski racer. He competed primarily in slalom and earlier also in giant slalom and combined. Born in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, Savoie, Grange grew up in Valloire, Galibier, and made his World Cup debut at age 19 in January 2004. In February 2007, he won the bronze medal in the slalom at the 2007 World Championships in Åre, Sweden. He won his first World Cup race on 17 December 2007, and won the 2009 season title in the slalom. Injured in early December 2009 in a giant slalom at Beaver Creek, he opted for surgery and missed the remainder of the 2010 season, which included the 2010 Winter Olympics. Cyprien Richard (born 27 January 1979) is a retired French FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, World Cup Alpine skiing, alpine ski racer. Born in Thonon-les-Bains, Haute Savoie, Richard attained four World Cup podiums, all in giant slalom, with one victory, at Adelboden, Switzerland, a tie with Aksel Lund Svindal for first place.
