FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1954
The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1954 were held in Åre, Sweden, from 28 February – 7 March. :de:Alpine Skiweltmeisterschaft 1954 Olympic champion Stein Eriksen of Norway won three gold medals and was eighth in the downhill. The combined event returned as a "paper race" (through 1980), based on the best average finish in all three events, all of which had to be completed. The World Championships returned to Åre in 2007 and 2019. Åre
Åre () is a locality and one of the leading Scandinavian ski resorts situated in Åre Municipality, Jämtland County, Sweden with 3,200 inhabitants in 2018. It is, however, not the seat of the municipality, which is Järpen. 25% of the local economy is based on tourism, most notably the downhill skiing and biking resorts in Åre, Duved and Storlien. The growth in tourism has resulted in the development of hotels, recreational and shopping opportunities in the area. History In the 12th century the Åre Old Church was built. Saint Olaf the Holy is a historical figure who has influenced the village and for centuries pilgrims passed through the village on their way to Trondheim. Sami people settled in the mid-17th century to take advantage of good reindeer pasture. In the 18th and 19th century the copper mines in Fröå were important industries. Jannette Burr
Jannette Weston Burr (April 30, 1927 – July 26, 2022) was an American former professional alpine skier from Sun Valley, Idaho. She learned to ski in Sun Valley and competed in races across the globe during the 1950s, winning medals in many of them. In 1970, she was inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. Career overview Burr was born in Seattle, Washington. She began water skiing in the early 1940s, but had not learned how to alpine ski until a few years prior to competing professionally. About a year before her first downhill race, Burr went to Sun Valley Ski Resort on a "Learn-to-Ski Week" package, where she found that she enjoyed alpine skiing. Stig Oskar Sollander (25 June 1926 – 12 December 2019) was a Swedish alpine skier who competed in the 1948, 1952 and 1956 Winter Olympics. He had his best results in the slalom, finishing fifth in 1952 and winning Sweden's first Olympic medal in alpine skiing, a bronze in 1956.
