The FIL World Luge Championships 1959 took place in Villard-de-Lans, France. The men's doubles event was cancelled to poor weather conditions. Villard-de-Lans
Villard-de-Lans (; oc, Lo Vilar de Lanç) is a Communes of France, commune in the Isère Departments of France, department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regions of France, region in southeastern France. The town is also situated in the Vercors Massif. It was the administrative centre of the eponymous canton until the 2015 French departmental elections, departmental elections of 2015. After the elections, Villard-de-Lans and the communes of its former canton were all incorporated into the new canton of Fontaine-Vercors. FIL European Luge Championships
The FIL European Luge Championships, part of the International Luge Federation (FIL) have taken place since 1914. From 1914 to 1934, these championships were part of the Internationaler Schlittensportsverband (ISSV - International Sled Sport Federation in ). From 1935 to 1956, the championships were held under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing (FIBT - International Bobsleigh and Tobagganing Federation in ). Since 1962, the event has been under the auspices of the FIL and has been held in even-numbered years since 1980. Since 2012, it is held annually. Luge At The Winter Olympics
Luge is a winter sport featured at the Winter Olympic Games where a competitor or two-person team rides a flat sled while lying supine (face up) and feet first. The sport is usually contested on a specially designed ice track that allows gravity to increase the sled's speed. The winner normally completes the route with the fastest overall time. It was first contested at the 1964 Winter Olympics, with both men's and women's events and a doubles event. Doubles is technically considered an open event since 1994, but only men have competed in it. German lugers (competing under the IOC country codes of EUA, GDR, FRG and GER at different times since 1964) have dominated the competition, winning 87 medals of 153 possible. The FIL World Luge Championships 2011 took place 28–30 January 2011 in Cesana, Italy at the Cesana Pariol bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton track. A total of 19 countries competed. Josef Feistmantl
Josef Feistmantl (23 February 1939 – 10 March 2019) was an Austrian luger who competed from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s. He competed at three Olympic Games. Biography Feistmantl was born in Absam. Competing in two Winter Olympics, he won the gold medal in the men's doubles event at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck along with Manfred Stengl. Feistmantl also won five medals in the men's singles event at the FIL World Luge Championships with one gold (1969 - the first Worlds to be held on an artificial track, at Königssee), two silvers (1959, 1970), and two bronzes (1967, 1971). He also won two medals in the men's doubles event at the FIL European Luge Championships with one gold (1967) and one silver (1962). David Moroder
David Moroder (born 28 January 1931 in Ortisei in Val Gardena - died 10 March 1997) was an Italian luger and sculptor. Biography David Moroder comes from the Grödner craftsman family of Moroder. He has four sons, including Walter Moroder, who works as a sculptor using modern materials. As a sculptor he worked with wood and bronze. He received artistic impulses from his brother Rudolf Moroder and from Augusto Murer. He had private and public clients and participated in various exhibitions in the region. Sporting career Moroder was active as a luge athlete. He was third in the single-seater in 1959 at the Luge World Championships in Villard -de-Lans and in 1961 together with Raimondo Prinoth second in the doubles at the World Championships in Girenbad.
