The FIL European Luge Championships 1988 took place in Schönau am Königsee, Königssee, West Germany for a record fifth time after hosting the event previously in FIL European Luge Championships 1967, 1967, FIL European Luge Championships 1972, 1972, FIL European Luge Championships 1973, 1973, and FIL European Luge Championships 1977, 1977. Hansjörg Raffl (born 29 January 1958 in Olang) is an Italian former luger who competed from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s. Competing in five Winter Olympics, he won two medals in the men's doubles event with a silver in 1994 and a bronze in 1992. Gerda Weissensteiner
Gerda Weissensteiner OMRI (born 3 January 1969) is an Italian luger and bobsleigh pilot who competed from the late 1980s to 2006. Competing in six Winter Olympics, she won the gold medal in the women's singles luge event at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, and together with Jennifer Isacco she won the bronze in Turin in the two-woman bobsleigh at the 2006 Winter Olympics. She was the first Italian sportsperson to win Olympic medals in two disciplines. Luge career Weissensteiner was introduced to luge by her uncle at the age of seven, initially sledding on natural luge tracks. She won a World Junior Luge Championship title in 1988. Maria-Luise Rainer (born 23 April 1959 in South Tyrol) is an Italian luger who competed between the late 1970s and the late 1980s. Competitive career Rainer won the bronze medal in the women's singles event at the 1979 FIL World Luge Championships in Königssee, West Germany. In addition, she won two medals at the FIL European Luge Championships with a silver (women's singles, 1980) and a bronze (mixed team, 1988). Rainer also won the overall Luge World Cup title in women's singles in the 1985–86 season. Paul Hildgartner (born 8 June 1952 in Chienes) is an Italian luger who competed from the early 1970s to the late 1980s. Competing in five Winter Olympics, he earned two gold medals (Men's doubles: 1972, Men's singles: 1984) and one silver medal (Men's singles: 1980) for his efforts. At the 1984 Winter Olympics, Hildgartner carried the Italian flag during the opening ceremonies. Jens Müller (born 6 July 1965 in Torgau, Bezirk Leipzig) is an East German-German luger who competed from 1985 to 2001. He won two medals at the Winter Olympics in men's singles with a gold at Calgary in 1988 and a bronze at Nagano in 1998. Müller started for the ASK Vorwärts Oberhof and the BSR "Rennsteig" Oberhof. Michael Walter (12 March 1959 in Pirna – 6 August 2016) was a German luger who competed during the 1980s. He won two medals in the men's singles event at the FIL World Luge Championships with a gold in 1985 and a silver in 1981. Walter also won two medals at the FIL European Luge Championships with a silver in the mixed team event (1988) and a bronze in the men's singles event (1986).
