FC Porto (swimming)
The FC Porto swimming section was founded in 1908, and to this day is one of the most decorated swimming teams in Portugal. The club competes in Campeonato Nacional de Clubes em Natação (National Club Championship in Swimming) and has achieved multiple trophies both in the men and women departments. The swimming section is part of the club heritage since its foundation, their first victory was the 'Taça Leixões' in 1908, and then the participation for the first time in the championship of Portugal occurred in 1919. Names of famous athletes like Abel Guimarães, Adriano Antunes, Alexandrina Pinto, Alíria Silva, António Antunes, António Brenha, António Maria Pereira, Aristides Silva, Edgar Santos, Joaquim Lagoa, and so many others contributed for the club early success. Futebol Clube do Porto, MHIH, OM (), commonly known as FC Porto or simply Porto, is a Portuguese professional sports club based in Porto. It is best known for the professional football team playing in the Primeira Liga, the top flight of Portuguese football. Founded on 28 September 1893, Porto is one of the " Big Three" (Portuguese: ''Os Três Grandes'') teams in Portugal – together with Lisbon-based rivals Benfica and Sporting CP, that have appeared in every season of the Primeira Liga since its establishment in 1934. They are nicknamed ''Dragões'' (Dragons), for the mythical creature atop the club's crest, and ''Azuis e brancos'' (Blue-and-whites), for the shirt colours. Those colours are in stripes with blue shorts. The club supporters are called ''portistas''. The 2012 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XXX Olympiad and also known as London 2012) was an international multi-sport event held from 27 July to 12 August 2012 in London, England, United Kingdom. The first event, the group stage in women's football, began on 25 July at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, followed by the opening ceremony on 27 July. 10,768 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in the 2012 Olympics. Portugal At The 1996 Summer Olympics
Portugal competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, United States. A delegation with a record number of 107 competitors (83 men and 24 women) participated in 79 events across 18 sports. Two medals were won, one of them being Portugal's third Olympic gold, thanks to Fernanda Ribeiro's surprise victory in the women's 10000m over the 5000m Olympic champion Wang Junxia. This third Olympic title in the athletics reinforced Portugal's strength in this sport and in particular the long-distance endurance events. A bronze was achieved by the 470 class male team, reviving a successful sailing tradition in this nation's Olympic delegations. In Atlanta, Portugal debuted in cycling, women's sailing classes, slalom canoeing, and in newly promoted beach volleyball, almost grabbing a bronze medal in the latter, on its first participation.
