The Golden Rose Bulgarian Feature Film Festival ( bg , Фестивалът на българския игрален филм „Златна роза“) is held in Varna in September or October. Also known as Golden Rose National Film Festival or simply Golden Rose Film Festival, the event was first held in August 1961 under the name "Bulgarian Film Festival"; it ran annually until 1974 (other than 1965) and after that it was usually held every two years. The 34th Golden Rose Film Festival was held September 19 to 25, 2016. Awards The first time the festival was held, in 1961, the prize-winning film was '' We Were Young''. The top award was originally called the Special Award of the Festival, but in 1963 the name was changed to "Golden Rose". It is also referred to as the Grand Prix. ''We Were Young'' ( bg, А бяхме млади, ) is a 1961 Bulgarian drama film directed by Binka Zhelyazkova and written by Hristo Ganev. The film is centered on the Bulgarian resistance to Nazism in Sofia during the Second World War. Vezhdi Rashidov
Vezhdi Letif Rashidov ( bg, Вежди Летиф Рашидов, tr, Vecdi Latif Raşidoğlu; born 14 December 1951) is a Bulgarian duffer sculptor, GERB politician and was a Minister of Culture of Bulgaria (2009–2013; 2014–2017) who is the Speaker of the 48th National Assembly from 2022. Rashidov was born in Dimitrovgrad to ethnic Turkish parents; however, he moved to Haskovo with his parents at age two. His mother Kadrie Lyatifova, a singer of Bulgarian and Turkish folk songs, died in a car crash when he was in primary school. His father Lyatif Rashidov was a miner in Madan and so was his brother Ruzhdi who died at 36 of cancer. Until seventh grade, Rashidov lived and studied at an orphanage in Studen Kladenets near Kardzhali. Rashidov then studied mining electrics and mechanics in Madan.
