Fundi (Billy) Abernathy
Billy Abernathy (1939–2016) was an American photographer. He was married to Laini (Sylvia) Abernathy, an artist and activist. History During his lifetime he officially changed him name to Fundi. Billy (Fundi) Abernathy was associated with the AfriCOBRA. Around the 1970s, both him and his wife Sylvia changed their names to Fundi Abernathy and Laini Abernathy with the purpose of "africanizing their name". Alongside his wife, Abernathy worked documenting African American Black culture in the South Side of Chicago. Billy (Fundi) Abernathy was associated with the AfriCOBRA, a group of black artists who worked in Chicago seeking a way of bringing light to black communities in visual arts. Career Billy Abernathy collaborated on the ''Wall of Respect'', an outdoor mural, with his wife, Sylvia. Fundi Konde
Fundi Konde (August 24, 1924 – June 29, 2000) was a Kenyan musician. He was one of the first popular performers from that country, and was said to be the first electric guitarist from East Africa. His music utilized Swahili lyrics accompanied by a mixture of regional rhythms and imported rumba. His professional career began during World War II, when he performed for East African troops in South Asia. Returning home to Kenya, he made some of the earliest recordings from the region, including the hits "Mama Sowera", "Majengo Siendi Tena", "Kipenzi Waniua Ua" and "Jambo Sigara". He continued to perform and record until 1963, when he retired until the early 1980s, when he began singing, composing and producing again. He was born in 1924 in Mwabayanyundo village, Kilifi District. He represented the Giriama tribe. He died in 2000 at his home in Kibera, Nairobi. Nomfundo Tshazibana (born ), commonly known as Fundi Tshazibana, is a South African economist, who serves Deputy Governor of the South African Reserve Bank from 10 July 2019. Immediately prior to her appointment to that position, she served as an adviser to the Governor of the bank, since 10 February 2018. Before that, from 2015 until 2018, she served as Alternate Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund, in Washington, DC, for 23 Sub-Saharan African countries, including South Africa. Early life and education Tshazibana was born in South Africa circa 1977. She grew up in the town of Benoni, Gauteng, about by road, east of Johannesburg, the largest city in that country. Fundis is short for fundamentalists. The term was used for a faction within the German Green Party. The faction was formed in conflict to the Realo-faction within their party. The term has also been applied to similar conflicts. General meaning The abbreviation Fundi is a label applied to members who tend towards a ''fundamentalist'' interpretation of its common ideology (e.g. 'green' values), as opposed to the more "pragmatic realism" of the Realo alternative. Other terms for green Fundis are wild greens or deep greens. They tend towards veganism, a strong animal rights approach and an aversion to traditional political methods, rejecting more centralized systems of governance. Fondi ( la, Fundi; Southern Laziale: ''Fùnn'') is a city and ''comune'' in the province of Latina, Lazio, central Italy, halfway between Rome and Naples. As of 2017, the city had a population of 39,800. The city has experienced steady population growth since the early 2000s, though this has slowed in recent years. Before the construction of the highway between the latter cities in the late 1950s, Fondi had been an important settlement on the Roman Via Appia, which was the main connection from Rome to much of southern Italy. Geography Fondi is the main town of the Plain of Fondi (''Piana di Fondi'' in Italian), a small plain between the Ausoni and Aurunci mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea. ''Digitaria exilis'', referred to as findi or fundi in areas of Africa, such as The Gambia, with English common names white fonio, fonio millet, and hungry rice or acha rice, is a grass species. It is the most important of a diverse group of wild and domesticated ''Digitaria'' species known as fonio that are harvested in the savannas of West Africa. The grains are very small. It has potential to improve nutrition, boost food security, foster rural development and support sustainable use of the land. Despite its valuable characteristics and widespread cultivation, fonio has generally received limited research and development attention, which is also why the species is sometimes referred to as an underutilized crop. Ella Baker
Ella Josephine Baker (December 13, 1903 – December 13, 1986) was an African-American civil rights and human rights activist. She was a largely behind-the-scenes organizer whose career spanned more than five decades. In New York City and the South, she worked alongside some of the most noted civil rights leaders of the 20th century, including W. E. B. Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall, A. Philip Randolph, and Martin Luther King Jr. She also mentored many emerging activists, such as Diane Nash, Stokely Carmichael, and Bob Moses, as leaders in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Baker criticized professionalized, charismatic leadership; she promoted grassroots organizing, radical democracy, and the ability of the oppressed to understand their worlds and advocate for themselves. Kasakela Chimpanzee Community
The Kasekela chimpanzee community (formerly spelled Kasakela) is a habituated community of wild eastern chimpanzees that lives in Gombe National Park near Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania. The community was the subject of Jane Goodall's pioneering study that began in 1960, and studies have continued ever since, becoming the longest continuous study of any animals in their natural habitat. As a result, the community has been instrumental in the study of chimpanzees and has been popularized in several books and documentaries. The community's popularity was enhanced by Goodall's practice of giving names to the chimpanzees she was observing, in contrast to the typical scientific practice of identifying the subjects by number.
