Fun-Da-Mental
Fun-Da-Mental is a British-based multi-ethnic hip-hop– ethno-techno– world fusion music group formed in 1991. The group is notable for its energetic fusion of Eastern and Western musical forms, for its outspoken political stance, and for its strong Islamic affiliation and advocacy. Fun-Da-Mental's political stance has led to the group earning the label "the Asian Public Enemy". The group's work has led to international attention and collaborations with artists from Pakistan, South Africa and Siberia. Membership The core member of the group is Aki "Propa-Gandhi" Nawaz (real name Haq Qureshi). Seize The Time (Fun-Da-Mental Album)
''Seize the Time'' is the debut album by the English worldbeat group Fun-Da-Mental, released in 1994. It was released in the United States by Mammoth Records. The album peaked at No. 74 on the UK Albums Chart. Production The album was produced by group leader Aki Nawaz. A sarangi passage by Sultan Khan is sampled on "Fartherland". Members of Transglobal Underground contributed to "Mr. Bubbleman". A political album, tracks like "Dog Tribe", about the beating of a South Asian man by British skinheads, review racial tensions in England during the 1990s. The album's title is a reference to the Bobby Seale slogan. Mushtaq Omar Uddin
Mushtaq Omar Uddin (born 14 August 1973), also known simply as Mushtaq, is an English music producer, singer, songwriter, and former lead vocalist for British hip hop group Fun-Da-Mental when he was known at the time by his stage name MC Mushtaq. Early life Uddin was born in London to Bangladeshi and Iranian parents. He attended Quintin Kynaston Community Academy and studied Sociology at Maria Fedeilis. He later received a scholarship at Guildhall School of Music and Drama to study contemporary composition. As a young boy, Uddin joined a community band as a drummer where he met brothers Sam (State of Bengal) and Deeder Zaman. In 1987, Uddin became an original member the State of Bengal group which included Sam and Deedar Zaman. Singing career In summer 1993, Fun-Da-Mental Uddin met Aki "Propa-Gandhi" Nawaz and joined Fun-Da-Mental as the lead vocalist under the stage name of MC Mushtaq. Aki Nawaz
Aki Nawaz (born Haq Nawaz Qureshi) is an English singer, rapper and musician and part of the band Fun-Da-Mental. He is best known for his controversial lyrics. Profile In the 1980s, using his proper name Haq Qureshi, he played drums with the gothic rock band Southern Death Cult, a forerunner to The Cult, featuring Ian Astbury on vocals. When Astbury moved on to found his own band, the remaining musicians stayed together for a time as Getting the Fear, recruiting new singer Bee Hampshire from Futon, but eventually broke up. In 1986, Nawaz moved to London, set up a management company and signed artists to major record labels. Two years later, he formed Nation Records as a label primarily focused on creating fusions between different musical forms from all over the world for a more youth-oriented audience. Mammoth Records was an independent record label founded in 1989 by Jay Faires in the Carrboro area of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Southern Death Cult
Southern Death Cult were a British post-punk/gothic rock band in the early 1980s. They are now primarily known for having given their lead singer and parts of the name to the multi-platinum hard rock band the Cult. Despite the similarities in the names, "Southern Death Cult" were distinct from "Death Cult"/"the Cult". History The musical history of Southern Death Cult can be charted as far back as early 1979 in Bradford, Yorkshire with the band Violation. Bassist Barry Jepson and drummer Haq Nawaz "Aky" Qureshi had formed the band with a guitarist now only known as Mick. The band rehearsed for about 7 months before playing their first show. Transglobal Underground (sometimes written as Trans-Global Underground) is an English electro-world music group, specializing in a fusion of western, Asian and African music styles (sometimes labelled world fusion and ethno techno). Their first four albums featured Natacha Atlas as lead singer, and their single "Temple Head" was used in a Coca-Cola advertising campaign for the 1996 Olympic Games. In 2008 they won the BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music after the release of their seventh official album, ''Moonshout''. ''The Cutting Room Floor'' (TCRF) is a website dedicated to the cataloguing of unused content and leftover debugging material in video games. The site and its discoveries have been referenced in the gaming press. The site started out as part of a blog but was reworked and relaunched as a wiki in 2010. The reworked site is considered by ''Edge'' to be a major catalogue of unused video game content. History ''The Cutting Room Floor'' was started by Rachel Mae in 2002 as part of a blog. It mainly focused on Nintendo Entertainment System games, and was occasionally updated. In the late 2000s, Alex Workman, better known as Xkeeper, reworked the site into a wiki, which launched on 2 February 2010. Prophets of Da City (POC) is a hip hop crew from Cape Town, South Africa.
