Frédéric Montenard
Frédéric Montenard (17 May 1849, Paris – 11 February 1926, Besse-sur-Issole) was a French landscape and seascape painter. Biography He came from an old Provençal family, and his uncle was the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Giraud. His art studies began at the École des Beaux-arts, where his teacher was Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. He made his début at the Salon in 1872 with landscapes and seascapes; participating in their exhibitions on a regular basis for many years. In 1873, he joined with fellow painters Gustave Garaud and Octave Gallian to establish a workshop in Toulon, and was joined there in 1878 by Eugène Dauphin, . He achieved his first career breakthrough in 1883 when two of his paintings were purchased by the French government. Six years later, he won a Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle. Marseille
Marseille ( , , ; also spelled in English as Marseilles; oc, Marselha ) is the prefecture of the French department of Bouches-du-Rhône and capital of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Frédéric Mistral
Joseph Étienne Frédéric Mistral (; oc, Josèp Estève Frederic Mistral, 8 September 1830 – 25 March 1914) was a French writer of Occitan literature and lexicographer of the Provençal form of the language. He received the 1904 Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of the fresh originality and true inspiration of his poetic production, which faithfully reflects the natural scenery and native spirit of his people, and, in addition, his significant work as a Provençal philologist". Mistral was a founding member of the Félibrige and member of the Académie de Marseille. His name in his native language was Frederi Mistral (Mistrau) according to the Mistralian orthography or Frederic Mistral (or Mistrau) according to the classical orthography. Peintre de la Marine (''Painter of the Fleet'') is a title awarded by the minister of defence in France to artists who have devoted their talents to the sea, the French Navy and other maritime subjects. It was set up in 1830 by the July Monarchy and can be awarded to painters, photographers, illustrators, engravers, and sculptors. Rights and privileges The title is unpaid but does grant certain facilities and privileges: *being able to embark on French Navy vessels *wearing a uniform *being allowed to follow one's artistic signature with an anchor *belonging to the Service historique de la Marine.
