Frome
Frome ( ) is a town and civil parish in eastern Somerset, England. The town is built on uneven high ground at the eastern end of the Mendip Hills, and centres on the River Frome. The town, about south of Bath, is the largest in the Mendip district of Somerset and is part of the parliamentary constituency of Somerton and Frome. The population was 28,559 in 2021. Frome was one of the largest towns in Somerset until the Industrial Revolution, and was larger than Bath from AD 950 until 1650. The town first grew due to the wool and cloth industry; it later diversified into metal-working and printing, although these have declined. The town was enlarged during the 20th century but retains a large number of listed buildings, and most of the centre falls within a conservation area. In the 2011 census, the population was given as 26,203. The town has road and rail transport links and acts as an economic centre for the surrounding area. River Frome, Dorset
The River Frome is a river in Dorset in the south of England. At 30 miles (48 km) long it is the major chalkstream in southwest England. It is navigable upstream from Poole Harbour as far as the town of Wareham. Geography The river rises in the Dorset Downs at Evershot, passes through Maiden Newton, Dorchester, West Stafford and Woodsford. At Wareham it and the parallel River Piddle flow into Poole Harbour via the Wareham Channel. The catchment area is , approximately one sixth of the county. East of Dorchester the river runs over sands, clays and gravels which overlie the chalk; as the valley gradient is gentle the Frome has deposited much sediment here and thus created a broad floodplain. Historically this contained marshes and gave the name to the Durotriges, ''water dwellers'', the Brittonic Celtic tribe who inhabited Dorset. Frome Street
Frome Street is a street in the East End of the city centre of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. It runs from North Terrace in the north to Angas Street, and then as Regent Street North to Carrington Street in the south. North of North Terrace, Frome Street continues towards North Adelaide as Frome Road. Built in the early 1960s, the street was named after Edward Charles Frome, who was Surveyor General of South Australia for most of the 1840s. History left, Tavistock Hotel, Adelaide in 1902. Was demolished in 1962 to make way for Frome Street Frome Street was not part of the William Light's plan for Adelaide, and did not exist as a main street until the 1960s. Frome Road is a connecting road in the South Australian capital city of Adelaide. It starts from North Terrace in the Adelaide city centre, running in a northerly direction past the University of South Australia, the site of the old Royal Adelaide Hospital, now known as Lot Fourteen, the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science and the University of Adelaide, and then through the Adelaide Parklands to the Adelaide Zoo where it turns northeasterly, crosses the River Torrens via Albert Bridge, and continues through the parklands to the intersection with Melbourne Street and Brougham Place in North Adelaide. Plot The novel is a framed narrative. The framing story concerns an unnamed male narrator spending a winter in Starkfield while in the area on business. He spots a limping, quiet man around the village, who is somehow compelling in his demeanor and carriage. This is Ethan Frome, who is a lifelong resident and a local fixture of the community. Norman Frederick Frome
Sir Norman Frederick Frome CIE, DFC (23 September 1899 – 28 November 1982) was an English ornithologist. Frome was born in Aldershot, and was educated at Fairfield Grammar School and at the University of Bristol. Frome worked in India after joining the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department in 1923 after serving in the RAF. In 1937 he became Director of Telegraphs and in 1941 Postmaster General. During this time he made studies on the birds of various parts of India. These studies are the oldest and most comprehensive studies of the birds of the Delhi region. Milton Frome (February 24, 1909 – March 21, 1989) was an American character actor. Career Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Frome landed his first acting job in the short subject ''Daredevil O'Dare'' in 1934. He did not act again until 1939 when he joined the cast of ''Ride 'Em Cowgirl'' as Oliver Sheahe. Lenny Frome
Lenny Frome (12 May 1926 – 15 March 1998) was a gambling author and video poker expert best known for his 1994 book ''Winning Strategies for Video Poker''. He is often referred to as the "Godfather" of video poker for his outspoken advocacy of the game and for raising the game's popularity. Frome, at a time when serious gamblers viewed the game as little more than a slot machine, saw the potential the game offered if played with perfect strategy. Edward Charles Frome
General Edward Charles Frome (7 January 1802 – 2 November 1890) was a prominent British Army officer and Surveyor General of South Australia. Early life Born in Gibraltar on 7 January 1802, Frome was orphaned early in his life. He was educated in Blackheath, London, England, where he became a close friend of Benjamin Disraeli. Career He received his commission in the Royal Engineers in 1825. He was involved in the Rideau Canal construction in Canada in 1827 to 1833. In September 1839 Frome arrived in South Australia on the ship ''Recovery'' to take up an appointment as the colony's third Surveyor General. He was also a member of the South Australian Legislative Council (2 October 1839 to 14 June 1843). He made an important contribution in surveying large areas of South Australia for new immigrants to settle upon. River Frome, Stroud
The River Frome, once also known as the Stroudwater, is a small river in Gloucestershire, England. It is to be distinguished from another River Frome in Gloucestershire, the Bristol Frome, and the nearby River Frome, Herefordshire. The river is approximately long. It flows broadly westwards, from its source high up on the Cotswold escarpment, initially through a narrow, steep-sided valley, which it shares with the Thames and Severn Canal and the Golden Valley line railway. Below Stroud, the main town on the river, it is swelled by flows from several tributaries, and the valley opens out, with the channel splitting into two before reuniting into a single channel. The river, as well as its tributaries, has been used for milling since the time of the Domesday Book.
