Hypocorism
A hypocorism ( or ; from Ancient Greek: (), from (), 'to call by pet names', sometimes also ''hypocoristic'') or pet name is a name used to show affection for a person. It may be a diminutive form of a person's name, such as ''Izzy'' for Isabel or ''Bob (given name), Bob'' for Robert, or it may be unrelated. In linguistics, the term can be used more specifically to refer to the morphological process by which the standard form of the word is transformed into a form denoting affection, or to words resulting from this process. In English, a word is often Clipping (morphology), clipped down to a closed monosyllable and then suffixed with ''-y/-ie'' (phonologically /i/). Frits Eijken
Frits Evert Eijken (30 June 1893 – 6 June 1978) was a Dutch rower. He competed at the 1920 Summer Olympics in the single sculls, but failed to reach the final. In 1921, Eijken won the Diamond Challenge Sculls at Henley Royal Regatta beating Jack Beresford Jack Beresford, CBE (1 January 1899 – 3 December 1977), born Jack Beresford-Wiszniewski, was a British rower who won five medals at five Olympic Games in succession. Frederik 'Frits' David Holleman (11 May 1887 – 22 January 1958) was a Dutch and South African academic, ethnologist, and jurist, best known for his research into the indigenous legal systems of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and South Africa. Biography Frederik Holleman was born in Potchefstroom in the South African Republic (now a part of South Africa) in 1887 to a Dutch father and South African mother. Frits Henningsen
Frits Henningsen (1889–1965) was a Danish furniture designer and cabinet maker who achieved high standards of quality with exclusively handmade pieces. Henningsen was both the proprietor of a furniture-making workshop with a team of cabinetmakers in central Copenhagen as well as the designer of his own products. An active member of the Cabinetmakers Guild from 1927, he was admired by his peers for the high quality of his craftsmanship. Many of his pieces were crafted in exotic woods such as palisander and mahogany. All his furniture is handmade in line with traditional, labour-intensive methods from the 19th century. Frits Heide
Frits Ferdinand Rudolf Heide (7 December 1883 – 1957) was a Danish botanist and science writer. He studied botany at the University of Copenhagen from 1906 under professor Eugenius Warming, but never actually graduated. In 1909, Frits Heide revised J.P. Jacobsen’s translation of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species and The Descent of Man. He also translated Darwin's autobiography into Danish. Much later, in 1935, he finally published his own translation of the Origin of Species. Heide was a prolific writer in Danish popular science, but also contributed with more purely scientific texts on plant biology, forest history, ethnobotany etc. He also served as a private teacher. From around 1920, he was as a consultant for the Dutch government in Java, still publishing botanic works in Danish, Dutch and English on the side. Frits Hansen (31 January 1841 – 8 June 1911) was a Norwegian educator, newspaper editor, biographer and politician. Hansen was born at Larvik, in Vestfold, Norway. He was the son of Magistrate Frederik Christian Hansen (1799-1860) and Albine Elise Fougnerbakken (1801-1846). He earned his Cand.theol. degree in 1865. Subsequently, he became a teacher at the Norwegian Military Academy. From 1872, Hansen taught at Sagatun Folk High School in Hamar. In 1881 Hansen was a teacher at a private middle school in Stavanger. He was also editor of the Lillehammer newspaper ''Framgang''. In 1890, he wrote ''Edvard Storm, digteren fra Vaage'', a biography of the poet Edvard Storm. In 1896 he moved to Christiania (now Oslo) and was editor of ''Eidsvold''.
